Embark on a fulfilling career at BNSF Railway, where joining our Engineering Department means contributing to the backbone of our nation's rail infrastructure. The Signal Apprentice is an apprenticeship for the positions of Signalman, Signal Maintainer and/or Shop Signalman.
This is a full-time (40hrs/wk) position that is subject to on-call (24/7), overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shifts may vary (5 - 8/hr days followed by 2 days off; 4 - 10/hr days followed by 3 days off; 8 - 10/hr days followed by 6 days off).
Travel is required up to 90% outside of the headquarter location on and off the seniority district. Travel may also be required to (and remain at) job sites for extended periods, sometimes for days or weeks at a time, in the designated seniority region. Travel costs will be covered according to the collective bargaining agreement when traveling outside of the seniority district.
Training for this position is company-paid on-the-job and classroom training and will include travel to the BNSF Training Center. Successful candidates will enter an apprenticeship program, pass progressive exams, and demonstrate field proficiency. Pay rates will increase with each completed step of qualification.
Key responsibilities may include:
Performing construction, reconditioning, installation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing of wayside signal devices.
Loading and unloading supplies, installing underground and overhead cables including trenching and hand digging, and working around or operating heavy machinery.
Working on or around highway grade crossings, climbing signal masts, bridges, and ladders, and handling cables and wires for electrical connections.
Using various power and non-power tools, including shovels, picks, axes, sledgehammers, micrometers, voltmeters, amp meters, computer-based systems, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, tape measures, drills, and power saws.
Operating equipment (backhoes, trenchers, boom trucks, and directional boring machines).
Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

The MA Apprentice will work collaboratively, efficiently and effectively with other members of the care team, such as the provider, On-site Integration Specialists, Care Coordinators, Health Educators, Dieticians, and Behavioral Health Specialists. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Our structured program provides thoughtful opportunities for each apprentice to learn all the phases of a selected craft. This is done by focused tracking of assignments and classroom instruction that enables the apprentice to learn and demonstrate competence in the various job assignments within the trade. Our classroom curriculum meets the rigorous requirements of State of Washington Department of Labor & Industries. These college level classes are generally held on site after or before the apprentice's regular paid work hours. Classroom hours are unpaid and, on the apprentice's, own time. A normal academic load is about three hours of classroom instruction per week. Apprentices are required to maintain minimum cumulative average of 80% and failure of any course will result in removal from the program. Homework is assigned in each class and it is the responsibility of the apprentice to complete the assignments outside the normal workday.
What You will Do
Depending on the trade, apprentices (or pre-apprentices) will learn to build vessel structures, hull components, piping systems, machinery installations and alignments, and prepare surfaces for painting or structural welding. The exact functions and responsibilities will vary by trade, and cannot be enumerated for all trades in this posting. For illustration, however, Marine Pipefitters fabricate and install all the piping systems on the ship. Ship Fitter/ Fabricators fabricate and install the many pieces that make up the hull of the ship and install equipment foundations and miscellaneous structural pieces. Pipefitters are responsible for installing, fitting, and assembling piping systems made of materials such as steel, galvanized, copper, copper-nickel, and stainless steel, in a safe and efficient manner. Work is performed using appropriate tools, valves, and fittings, following technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to ensure accurate and compliant system installations. 1st Class Mechanics are expected to independently receive assignments, plan the work, identify material requirements, and execute tasks efficiently and accurately.
Duties & Responsibilities
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and always adhere to all OSHA safety standards and Tcnico safety policies.
Must adhere to all applicable safety, technical, and regulatory guidelines, including but not limited to:

Perform layout, fabrication, installation, modification, testing, and repair of piping systems using various materials (copper, CuNi, CRES, steel, etc.).
Proficient at reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and sketches; create fabrication sketches and targets for new installations and mock-ups.
Install systems with or without blueprints, including building mock-ups and off-site prefabrication.
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to pipe fitting removals and installation.
Prepare pipe joints for welding, brazing, soldering, threading or gluing, ensuring adherence to required tolerances.
Operate pipe bending machines and torches; fabricate and install pipe hangers and supports.
Proficient at performing air, hydrostatic, static and operational tests on piping systems in accordance with safety and quality standards, including 009-71.
Calculate joint allowances, take-offs, and tolerances for butt welds, socket welds, braze and threaded joints.
Must be proficient in performing silver brazing (Grades 3, 4, and 5) and installing various MAF fittings.
Work independently and safely, following all applicable procedures, specifications, and safety regulations.
Must have the ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Pipefitting trade including but not limited to, pipe benders, bandsaws, grinders, drills and pipe threaders. Also possess and maintain personal hand tools necessary to accomplish their trade.
Read and interpret Chemist and Competent Person reports to ensure safe conditions for hot work.
Conduct self-inspections to ensure work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings and specifications.
Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen, providing direction as a senior mechanic when required.
Maintain a good attendance record, demonstrate a positive and professional attitude, work well with others, take pride in your work, and be receptive to constructive feedback from mentors (supervisor, PMT, etc.).
Certification Requirements
Must be certified to braze (Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5)
Certified in LOK-Ring (MAF fittings)
Experience Requirements
4 - 6 years of experience as a Pipefitter in a shipyard.
Other Requirements
Must be able to work in various environmental conditions including outdoor weather, heights, confined spaces, loud noise, and exposure to airborne particles or fumes.
Must be able to wear a respirator as required for specific tasks and maintain compliance with fit testing and respiratory protection protocols.
Regularly required to sit, reach, and use hands for handling or operating tools and equipment.
Occasionally required to stoop, bend, squat, crawl, and climb ladders or structures (e.g., masts, tanks, voids).
Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. independently and seek assistance for heavier loads.
Must be able to pass Drug Screening, Work Ability Screening.
