When Corning started at the Appleton Coated Paper Company in 1968, as Appvion was known then, it was a family business still owned by Martha Siekman, daughter of founder Charles Boyd.
Going back to 2001, when the company couldn't find a buyer, employees overwhelmingly voted to use $107 million of their own 401(k) funds as a downpayment toward the company's $810 million purchase price.
Employees originally bought stock at $10 a share in 2001.
In retrospect, one ESOP expert said employees should not look back at the 2001 decision to buy the company as a failure.
He was in the Encapsys division when he was laid off in 2014.
At the time he was downsized in 2014 he figured he’d retire and do some consulting on the side. “It worked out,” he said. “It was a blessing in disguise.”
