Description: Rainier School District is in search of a Full-time Special Education Teacher.
Under general supervision, this Special Education Teacher serves as a specialist for students who require special education programming and support. This Special Education teacher works to provide appropriate educational programming for students who experience a continuum of needs from moderate to severe impact on their education due to their disability and who require support services in order to access and benefit from general education instruction.
This teacher provides students with direct instruction in academic, functional, cognitive processing, social skills, and life skills in the areas of hygiene, communication, self-care and personal management. In addition to these specific individualized programs, the staff may assist general education classroom teachers with selection of appropriate curricula and the development of behavior management programs.
Students may receive instruction within the Special Education classroom or in general education classes as appropriate. The Special Education teacher will follow the regulations associated with IDEA, FAPE, and procedural safeguards and IEP development and implementation. The Special Education teacher works under the supervision of the Director of Student Services.

Establish and Facilitate Meetings and Discussions, including; Identifies situations requiring group discussion, Organizes and facilitates effective meetings, involving all participants, follows up and monitors any intended actions and outcomes.
Consult with Others to Develop a Plan that Guides Appropriate Instruction and Other Services for students, including; Works effectively as a member of a team, contributes creative solutions to problems, assumes case management responsibilities when necessary, uses training and experience to support classroom instruction.
Utilize Support Personnel, including; Determines skills and abilities of assigned support personnel, Delegates duties to provide the most effective opportunities for students, Monitors the effectiveness of the support personnel and provides direction and training as needed, supervises interns as needed.
Demonstrates Responsiveness in Supporting Teachers' Instructional Needs, including; Supports instruction by being aware of teachers' resource needs, searches out and provides, or makes teachers aware of, available and appropriate learning resources, Consults with teachers regarding appropriate use of resources.
Provide Effective Direct Service to Students, Families, and Colleagues, including; Takes initiative in determining needed services, provides developmentally appropriate face-to-face services, based on the staff member's recognized level of competence, displays unconditional positive regard with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, displays flexibility in the nature and location of services provided, Communicates skillfully to each audience.
Engages in the Determination of and Provision of Primary Prevention Activities When Needed, including; Recognizes need for prevention, involves others in the planning and delivery of prevention activities, Performs prevention, follow-up, and program evaluation activities.
Develops student behavior plans, monitors and oversees implementation.
Create and/or Coordinate School-wide or Community Programs to Support Students and Families, including; Demonstrates thorough knowledge of a variety of developmental assets, resilience/protective factors, and related community supports, engages in a variety of activities to create programs that support students and families, evaluates intended outcomes of programs created.
Participate in professional in-service and ongoing training to further develop specialized skills.

Education, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must hold a valid Oregon Teaching

Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

: Ability to provide students with an intuitive understanding of the concepts of math at the established grade-level standards.
Reasoning Ability
: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
Proficiency in the usage of database software, internet software, and email. Ability to proficiently use the following programs: MS Word, Outlook, and Excel. Ability to type accurately and proficiently. Ability to effectively use Synergy gradebook.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, members of the community and others including vendors, law enforcement and other agencies. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions. A belief that all students can learn.

The Special Education Teacher plans and implements an instructional program that fosters learning and growth for students with special needs and guides them toward reaching their academic, social, intellectual and physical potential.
Reports to: Principal or Assistant Principal
Nature of Work: The Special Education Teacher works under general supervision. The nature of the work requires strict adherence to policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Essential Job Functions Specific to Special Education:
Provides specially designed instruction, including Behavior Instruction, Cognitive Instruction or Work Exploration, for students in accordance with their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Manages and coordinates the IEP and eligibility process for all students on caseload; confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs aimed at promoting educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
Provides behavior management programs to control atypical behavior and increase appropriate behavior.
Schedules and manages the activities of paraprofessionals, including delegating duties to Instructional Assistants, monitoring effectiveness, and providing direction and training as needed.
Serves as a member of multidisciplinary teams.

Working Conditions:
The Special Education Teacher works primarily in a school building. Although the primary work is indoors, the Teacher may on occasion work outdoors supervising students in variable weather conditions, including inclement weather. Some teachers may have assignments that require extensive amounts of time outside. The incumbent must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. The incumbent will need to walk quickly at times, as well as speak and hear in often loud environments. The work environment may include exposure to unpleasant interior temperatures, dirt, and communicable diseases.
The position involves high level of interaction with students and families from multiple and diverse backgrounds, many with unique needs. Mental demands on the Teacher are considerable. The incumbent must maintain composure under stress, and must manage him or herself in the presence of emotionally challenging interactions with staff, students, and parents.
Planning, assessment and communications with student and families include frequent, prolonged, and irregular hours, including evening and weekend time.

POSITION PURPOSE:
The purpose of the position is to deliver direct instruction to assigned students with intellectual disabilities enrolled in the Life Skills Education Program in accordance with identified curricular guidelines and established Individual Education Plans.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL/TRAINING:
A Bachelor's Degree and appropriate Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission special education license are required for the position.
Demonstrated knowledge of both federal and state special education requirements as well as current best practices in the field are essential.
Prior experience in a similar special education environment serving students with intellectual disabilities is preferred.
Experience working at the secondary level.
The ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, parents and staff, and the ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with student, staff and/or parent information is required.
A valid First Aid/CPR Card is preferred.

About Lane ESD's Life Skills Education Program
The Life Skills Education Program serves intellectually disabled students from kindergarten through age 21. It is part of a continuum of services available to students who have been identified and placed in special education. Classrooms for students in kindergarten through grade 12 are located in a number of elementary, middle and high school buildings in six Lane County school districts. Students aged 19 to 21 are served in the Transition Program on Lane ESD's Westmoreland Campus.
Support services include speech and language therapy, vocational/community training, behavioral consultation, autism consultation, supported inclusion, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing consultation services.
The Special Education Service Area also provides School Psychology, Speech Language Therapy and Augmentative Communication services, behavior consultation, Regional Low Incidence Program services and direct services for adjudicated youth.

Life Skills Education Program
Life Skills students have significant intellectual disabilities. Life Skills classrooms serving students Kindergarten through Grade 12 are located in school district buildings throughout Lane Co. The instructional focus is on functional academics and life activities. Transition classrooms serving students aged 19-21 are located on Lane ESD's Westmoreland campus and these students receive most of their instruction in community-based settings. Many students require assistance with personal care routines or demonstrate challenging behaviors. Long- term substitutes may be trained to implement delegated nursing tasks, such as tube feeding.
Lane School Program
Lane School is located on Lane ESD's Westmoreland campus. It is a short-term behavioral and academic day school designed for students kindergarten to Grade 8 in who have been identified with an emotional/behavioral disability and are experiencing significant behavioral, social, and academic difficulties. Students are referred by their resident school district. Lane School is a reintegration program designed to transition students back to their home school.
Comprehensive Services Program
Comprehensive Services Program is located on Eugene 4J's Fox Hollow campus. It serves students Kindergarten to Grade 8 with mental health needs. Services are designed to help students gain the skills needed to be successful in a less restrictive setting. Students are referred by their resident district and transition to a less restrictive setting as determined appropriate by an IEP team.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and appropriate Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission certification/endorsement(s) are required for the position.
Prior experience in similar special education environment is preferred.
Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to carry out the job duties.
Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, parents and staff.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with student, staff and/or parent information.
A valid First Aid/CPR Card(s) is preferred.

Retirement Contribution:
North Clackamas School District participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS and OPSRP) on behalf of its employees. Job Summary:

The incumbent performs a variety of instructional, training, and/or support duties to assist Special Education teachers in instruction, supervision, and education of students with severe physical and mental special needs that generally require placement in self-contained classrooms. Retirement Plan Contributions:
North Clackamas School District participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS and OPSRP) on behalf of its employees. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are intended to cover all or most Structured Learning Center/ATP settings. The specific duties that apply to any given position will vary.
* Works collaboratively by assisting teachers and specialists in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, student intervention, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social and life skills growth of students. Assistance is typically provided in special education Structured Learning Center (SLC), Transitional Learning Center (TLC), Adult Transition Program (ATP) classrooms or in regular education classrooms to students with similar one-on-one special needs.
* Provides complex toileting, feeding, mobility, and personal hygiene-related duties for students requiring such help.
* May independent living skills such as cooking, laundry, general personal hygiene and cleanliness.
* May take action, or assist in taking action, to de-escalate students who are at risk of harming themselves or others by following school/district-approved procedures.
* Provides instructional support and tutoring to students in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one situations.
* Implements behavior support and intervention plans as directed by a teacher. Documents behavior of students to assist teachers in assessing progress with education plans. Maintain, or assist in maintaining, student weekly progress reports.
* Assist in implementing physical and occupational therapy plans by working with students to increase range of motion, mobility, and positioning.
* May escort students in one-on-one or small groups to and from recess and playground, to and from bus locations, and may be required to ride on the bus with student(s).
* Oversees student safety during activities such as recess and playground supervision, bus duty, crossing guard duty, hallway supervision, etc. Take steps to intervene when students are not in control or maybe in dangerous or unsafe situations.
* When communicating with students, parents, community members, and other staff members exercises discretion and assures protection of student confidentiality consistent with the direction and guidance of staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures.
* Performs clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, making copies, operating office equipment, answering telephones, and record keeping.
