A Climber uses sophisticated climbing and rigging techniques to cut away dead or excess branches from trees or shrubs to maintain right-of-way for roads, sidewalks, or utilities. This position improves the appearance, health, and value of trees. As a Climber, you will prune/treat trees or shrubs using handsaws, hand pruners, clippers, and power pruners. You will work off the ground in the tree canopy in this position and may use truck-mounted lifts. Title: Trimmer/Climber Trainee Type: Full-Time/Non-Exempt Reports to: Foreperson/General Foreperson Essential Functions: Trims and/or removes trees by climbing with the aid of a ladder, safety belt, climbing line, powered trimmer lift truck, or works from the ground using saws/pruners. Will cut branches or trunk sections and drops or lowers them to the ground with lines. Uses appropriate tools, will fell trees or trimmed trunks and split them into manageable pieces. Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth. Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris and/or feeds brush into a wood chipper. Repairs slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming. Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, drives and operates trucks and equipment as assigned, and keeps trucks and work area clear and orderly. Trains new employees on proper procedures. Safeguards employees and public from hazards in and around work area. Cooperates with customer, police, and fire departments when blocking street or driveways. Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, etc. to protect employees as well as the public. Trained to perform tree and bucket rescue. Assumes responsibility for the inspection and proper working conditions of tools, trucks, and other work equipment. Requests repair or replacement of equipment when necessary. Works around hazardous equipment and in close proximity to energized power lines. Works around excessive noise from machines, chainsaws, wood chipper and must wear proper personal protective equipment. Is exposed to all temperatures and weather; will be exposed to nature, i.e., irritating plants, biting or stinging insects, dust, etc. May work on rough terrain. Helps enforce on-the-job safety practices for crew members. Services truck, chipper and equipment, maintaining them in a neat, clean, and specified mechanical order. Reports the need for equipment and truck maintenance to crew lead. Performs other related duties as required or assigned. Minimum Requirements: Has a minimum of 3 months experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews and/or has successfully completed applicable performance reviews. Enforces on-the-job safety practices. Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Needs to be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day. Must be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work tasks such as rain, heat, sun, cold, snow. Must be able to write, read, and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information. Must be able to communicate with others and represent Wright Tree Service in a professional manner. Possess the ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis and up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis. Job Description: A Tree Trimmer's primary responsibility is to perform tree trimming, clearing, & removal of trees along electric power lines and right of ways. A Tree Trimmer climbs trees to reach branches interfering with electric lines while using climbing equipment. A Tree Trimmer must have knowledge of chainsaw safety, and roping & rigging techniques. A Tree Trimmer also operates chain saws, pruners, brush chipper and may be called upon to operate an aerial lift device (bucket truck.) A skilled Tree Climber/Trimmer should have at least 6 months' verifiable experience in a utility line clearance and/or residential tree clearance setting. A Valid Driver License and/or CDL License is Preferred. We also specialize in Vegetation Management so a pesticide license would be beneficial, but it's not mandatory. Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth. Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris and/or feeds brush into a wood chipper. Repairs slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming. Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, drives and operates trucks and equipment as assigned, and keeps trucks and work area clear and orderly. Trains new employees on proper procedures. Safeguards employees and public from hazards in and around work area. Cooperates with customer, police, and fire departments when blocking street or driveways. Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, etc. to protect employees as well as the public. Trained to perform tree and bucket rescue. Assumes responsibility for the inspection and proper working conditions of tools, trucks, and other work equipment. Requests repair or replacement of equipment when necessary. Duties and Responsibilities Include Essential Duties: * Clears undergrowth from right-of-way by using hand tools or saws * Clears sites, streets, and grounds of woody and herbaceous materials, such as tree stumps, fallen trees, and limbs * Flags traffic to protect employees and the public from injury * Uses a chainsaw to cut brush, logs, and larger stumps * Gathers and feeds brush into wood chippers * Operates the controls for winches, booms, and spray equipment * Follows and gives hand, voice, or other signals in operating associated equipment * Services gasoline, air, and hand-powered tools, as well as other tree-related equipment * Drives and operates trucks and equipment as assigned * Duties and responsibilities may change with or without notice What You'll Bring to the Team * Understands occupational hazards and safety precautions * Understands basic knots, including but not limited to Bowline, Blake's Hitch, Taut-Line Hitch, and Clove Hitch * Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record per Company requirements * Knowledge of essential job functions and responsibilities * Attention to detail * Organizational skills * Strong oral and written communication skills * Ability to problem solve * Meet all physical requirements of the position * Pass all drug and alcohol screens as required by Company policy and, if applicable, required by DOT regulations * 18 years of age or older, or 21 if CDL is required * Legally authorized to work in the United States Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive list of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
