Arcadia University company history timeline

1853

There, in 1853, an intellectual outpost was formed—a school to teach such liberal arts as ancient history, rhetoric, and logic at a time when there were few higher education institutions open to young women.

The school was founded in Beaver, Pennsylvania, in 1853 as Beaver Female Seminary.

1872

The school attained collegiate status in 1872.

1884

(1884) First May Day dance and pageant celebration.

1907

(1907) In July, the Beaver Female Seminary officially changes its name to Beaver College.

1925

By 1925, Beaver College had experienced such tremendous growth that the school moved to a more adequate campus in Jenkintown, Pa., with larger facilities and greater opportunities for development.

1928

Needing additional property to accommodate its expansion, the Trustees of Beaver College secured a nearby estate known as Grey Towers in 1928.

1929

(1929) Beaver College acquires the 30-acre Harrison estate in March of this year, allowing the college to grow to offer women more opportunities.

1948

(1948) In June, a group of students journey to Europe to study international development after World War II.

1953

(1953) Beaver College celebrates 100 years and Beaver College's Women's Field Hockey team is undefeated in their season.

1958

Of the six endowed class scholarships, The Class of 1958 has raised the most of any class in Arcadia’s history.

1962

The college operated both the Jenkintown and Glenside campuses until 1962, when it consolidated all activities to the Glenside campus.

1973

(1973) Beaver College becomes co-educational, admitting men to the fall semester, and begins to offer graduate programs.

Some significant changes came in 1973, when the college launched its first graduate programs and began admitting men again.

1977

(1977) A groundbreaking Writing Across the Curriculum program begins at the College.

1984

(1984) Grey Towers Castle, the centerpiece of Arcadia's campus, is designated a National Historic Landmark in February.

1985

She began her tenure in 1985 and reinvigorated the University by doubling enrollment and leading transformative projects such as the construction of seven new buildings.

2001

In June 2001, trustees voted to apply for university status and to change the name.

2003

(2003) Doctor Bette E. Landman receives President Emerita status.

2005

Arcadia University's cheer team performs during a 2005 basketball game.

2006

Today, Arcadia University operates on the main Glenside campus, at academic centers and offices around the world, and in Christiana, Delaware, where the university's Department of Medical Science opened a campus in 2006.

2007

Attendees select their handmade bowls during the 2007 Empty Bowl event, which raises awareness for hunger in the community.

2009

(2009) In June, the University establishes six academic colleges and schools, including the College of Global Studies as the first full-fledged college of a University dedicated to international education.

The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University, officially opened in 2009, offers study abroad programs through more than 130 programs in 12 countries to students from colleges and universities across the United States, in addition to Arcadia undergraduates.

2011

In 2011, international students participate in a camp hosted by the Office of International Affairs (now the Division of Civic and Global Engagement).

2013

In 2013, the Raising Expectations for Academic Learning (REAL) Certificate launches for students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to have the opportunity to participate in a post-secondary academic-, vocational- and social inclusion-focused program.

2014

(2014) Arcadia University celebrates its first Investiture Ceremony, where Walter and Rosemary Deniken Blankley '57 endow the first Chair for the School of Education.

Arcadia University's women’s lacrosse team wins the 2014 MAC Championship.

2017

That means nearly half of the board that oversaw the university a year earlier were no longer there." In December 2017, Doctor Ajay Nair, vice-president at Emory University, was named the university's 22nd president.

2018

Arcadia University's baseball team wins the 2018 MAC Championship.

2019

Arcadia University launches a co-educational esports program as a varsity sport in the fall 2019.

2021

Arcadia University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students open the pro bono clinic in March 2021 for underinsured or uninsured members of the general public to have access to care.
