ArcelorMittal company history timeline

2002

At the end of 2002 Iscor acquired full control of the Saldanha Steel Mill.

2004

In December 2004 Ispat International NV acquired LNM Holdings NV, the parent company of Ispat Iscor.

2005

After the acquisition, the merged company’s name was changed to Mittal Steel Company NV. Ispat Iscor Limited commenced trading under the new name Mittal Steel South Africa Limited in March 2005.

2005: Purchase of small stake in Hunan Valin, China.

2005 bid for the Erdemir Group was won by OYAK, the Turkish army pension fund.

2007

In 2007 the newly merged ArcelorMittal continued to pursue an expansive growth strategy, with 35 transactions announced worldwide.

2008

Post 2008 global economic crisis, they had to come up with a new strategy for stabilizing the company’s position in the international market and for growth.

But in light of the deteriorating economic situation during 2008, ArcelorMittal suspended most investment activity by the end of the year.

2009

ArcelorMittal responds to the downturn in the global steel industry with production cuts, targeted cost savings and a US$10 billion net debt reduction by the end of 2009

2011

Capital expenditure on mining doubled in 2011 to almost US$1.3 billion, as the group embarked on a major development programme aimed at expanding existing mines and developing new ones.

2011: ArcelorMittal wins control of Baffinland iron ore mine, Canada.

2012

ArcelorMittal is a confirmed supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and principal funder of the landmark tower sculpture, the ArcelorMittal Orbit, in Olympic Park

2012: 15% stake sold in Canada Mines for $1.1 billion.

2013

2013: Sells 6.66% equity stake in Turkey's Erdemir Group for $267m.

2013: Opens new auto stampings production plant in Senica, Slovakia.

2013: Rumoured interest in purchase of TKS Alabama Calvert mill.

2014

In June 2014, it also had to pay the Government of Senegal $150 million for reneging on a contract to develop an iron ore deposit.

2014: With Gerdau, sells stake in US-based Gallatin to Nucor Corp.

2016

Both the LaPlace and the Vinton facilities were sold in March 2016 to an affiliate of Black Diamond Capital Management (‘Black Diamond’).

2016: Considers idling of operations at Indiana Harbor, East Chicago.

The Sagasahi iron ore block was acquired by the Essar Group in 2016.

2016: Sells LaPlace & Vinton long product facilities in the USA.

2017

2017: Group led by ArcelorMittal wins race to buy Italy's Ilva plant.

2019

On December 10 2019, a lower court decided that Ilva's blast furnace #2 should be shut down.

ArcelorMittal is recognised by CDP for its leadership on corporate transparency and action on climate change, scoring A- in the 2019 CDP Climate Change assessment

2020

2020: Idles blast furnace #4 at Indiana Harbor mill in East Chicago.

2020: Negotiations continue regarding new industrial plan for Ilva.

2021

2021: Announces construction in Spain of world's first full-scale zero carbon-emissions steel plant.

2021: State of Odisha approves plan for ArcelorMittal/Nippon Steel 24 mt/year plant in Kendrapara.

Mid-2021 Ilva investment agreement was signed with Invitalia, an Italian state-owned company.

2022

2022: Acquires 10 scrap yards in the south of Germany from Alba International Recycling.
