Beyer Blinder Belle is accepting applications for our 2026 Summer Internship Program and is seeking talented architecture students to join our multidisciplinary Washington, DC office.
Our ideal candidate is excited about invigorating existing and historic buildings through architecturaldesign, brings a strong design sense with technical grounding, and actively seeks to develop innovative design concepts and work collaboratively toward solutions.
The intern will undertake various assignments requiring the application of standard design processes, contribute to developing design solutions, prepare presentation drawings, and develop models for concept discussion and communication internally and externally. Interns will receive guidance and support from experienced professionals committed to providing mentorship throughout the internship.
During this 10-week internship, summer interns at BBB will have the opportunity to attend project site visits, learn from staff during weekly Lunch & Learn sessions, collaborate with fellow interns in a Design Charette, and participate in Professional Development workshops.
The intern will also:
· Perform basic architectural assignments, applying standard solutions and solving problems under the direction of an Intermediate Architect or above.
· Create graphic diagrams, drawings, renderings, models, etc., under the supervision of an Intermediate Architect or above.
· Edit, update, and pick up red marks on drawings, reports, etc.
The intern should have:
· Introductory/basic level understanding of basics of technical aspects of the job depending on the area (zoning, planning, construction documentation, etc.).
· Ability to research independently and communicate findings for technical problems.
· Ability to solve and communicate basic problems graphically and/or in writing.
Requirements
· Pursuing a master's or bachelor's degree in architecture (3 years of education completed)
· Strong design and graphic skills
· Clear/concise written, graphic, or oral communication.
· Ability to work collaboratively within the team as well as independently.
· Proficiency in BIM Revit, Rhino/Sketch up, and Adobe Creative Suite, is preferred
· Knowledge of Visualization, Production, Presentation, and Communication Software
Recruitment Process

Responsible for the issuance and content of deliverables, technical content of HOK documents and coordination of disciplines including consultants and for the supervision of all staff producing documents. Primary responsibility for the implementation of Construction Phase Services in collaboration with the PM. Responsible for securing QA reviews and the implementation of comments. Must be a licensed architect and is responsible for signing/sealing drawings. Needs to participate in and contribute to a culture of technical excellence.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership Responsible for ensuring the overall design intent of the project established by the Project Designer is incorporated into the detailed documentation. Monitors the design process from conceptual phase through construction administration, ensuring the design idea is consistent and properly executed. Responsible for technical resolution and coordination for a defined portion of a project. Performs product research. May be responsible for or assist Project Manager in writing specifications. Checks completed reports, plans, estimates and calculations for accuracy. Sets the overall strategy for producing the documents and identifies the sheets planned for each stage of the work. This includes defining how data will be organized into files and which elements will be incorporated in a Building Information Model (BIM). Sets up project team software parameters and manages standards. Fosters and maintains a collaborative professional working relationship with the Project Leadership Team. Responsible for communication with other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to ensure incorporation of all information into project requirements and provides support as necessary. Ensures that construction detail documentation conforms to quality assurance, quality control and best practice standards. Supervises preparation of technical drawings by other less senior level staff Performs as team leader on certain projects. Mentors and directs the work of less experienced staff, participates in professional development reviews and “Lessons Learned” sessions. Takes personal responsibility for fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.
Client Interface Works on developing a positive relationship of trust with client Leadership. Regularly communicates with client representatives to verify design requirements and specifications, progress reviews and delivery of final presentation. Fosters a commitment to external and internal client service. Teamwork Receives project direction from the Principal in Charge and Technical direction from the RBU Technical Principal. Coordinates use and tracks shared electronic documentation and files with project team, clients and consultants. Assists in planning and conducting work making minor adaptations and modifications to complete working drawing set(s). Meets with municipal building department and other governing agency officials to coordinate approvals or variances. Writes reports and memos to consultants and vendors to issue changes and track resolutions. Provides technical support and project communications to team as required. Attends on-site visits, field reviews and project meetings. Prepares and coordinates the review of contractor's schedules, submission of shop drawings and samples. Assists the Specification Writer in product research, consulting with manufacturers, evaluating and selecting project related materials. Involved with specification set-up and drawing coordination, research and appropriate use of HOK Standards. Provides support to all team members for specific market, discipline, or other areas of expertise. Participates in team meetings to help resolve project issues, coordination with other disciplines, schedule adherence, technical issues. Participates in review of project costs and budgets, adherence to schedule. Prepares meeting minutes of consultant coordination meetings. May prepare 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings and builds models for client/project team review. Incorporates Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.
Business Development May participate in business development meetings with team leaders to target specified project, client or market opportunities.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in architecture required 10 plus years interiors workplace experience preferred Registered Architect with current license required. NCARB registration preferred. Project size 30,000 SF plus LEED credential required within 12 months of employment.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES: Possess creative talent in conceptual design and rendering skills of either hand or computer sketching. Knowledge of design, trends, construction methodology, materials application and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness. Advanced knowledge of furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E), architectural/interior finishes, lighting, signage, art, and color schemes to carry out design intent. Advanced knowledge of building regulations and safety codes. Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. Advanced knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines. Proven ability to prioritize meeting deadlines and providing high quality service to clients. Position Summary
The Designer has responsibility for the quality of design for each project within the established scope of work, program, and budget objectives.
