Draftsmen work closely with architects on building projects. Their job is to prepare drawings of building plans and designs based on the specifications of the architect. They also use software and drafting stations to render designs. Architectural draftsmen may also coordinate other designs, like electrical, structural, and even mechanical designs.
There are different kinds of drafters. While architectural drafters focus on buildings and construction projects, civil drafters prepare civil engineering projects like bridges and highways. A day in the life of an architectural draftsman includes determining the procedures to be followed on a drawing, preparing designs to match these procedures, and producing copies of the completed drawing.
You're more likely to get hired as a draftsman if you have college training. Certificates and diplomas from technical institutes are also a great idea. You'll also need an understanding of design, drawing, and CADD.
There are certain skills that many architectural draftsmen have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. By taking a look through resumes, we were able to narrow down the most common skills for a person in this position. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed creativity, detail oriented and math skills.
If you're interested in becoming an architectural draftsman, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We've determined that 43.6% of architectural draftsmen have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 3.8% of architectural draftsmen have master's degrees. Even though some architectural draftsmen have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.
