Archuleta County company history timeline

1885

Archuleta County was created by the Colorado legislature on April 14, 1885, named for J. M. Archuleta.

In 1885 the building lots were appraised by the U. S. Commissioners and sold from the land office of that district, as appraised government land is sold, to the highest bidder for cash.

1890

The Fort Lewis military reservation of 20,000 acres was opened to homestead settlement in 1890.

1891

The town of Pagosa Springs was incorporated in 1891 and remains the only incorporated town in the county.

1895

1904

Stock Car 5564 is a double-deck car originally built in 1904 to transport livestock.

1926

In 1926 it was rebuilt.

1951

According to the Pagosa Springs Sun, August 10, 1951, the Fair was for the benefit of the entire community, town’s people and ranchers alike.

During the first meeting of the Fair Committee, Ray Macht was elected chairman and the fair was set for September 28 & 29, 1951.

Following a meeting in 1951 of several local ranchers and the county extension agent, the group decided to initiate a county fair.

1970

By 1970, Pagosa Springs was attracting the two industries that continue to sustain it to this day: land developers and tourists.
