Arena Stage company history timeline

1960

In 1960, the company moved into its current, custom-built complex.

Arena created The Living Stage Theater Company in 1960's, arguably its most ambitious project as it focused on integrating the cast and staging the most recognized and acclaimed works.

1965

27, 1965, New York, N.Y., United States), Austrian-born American architect, sculptor, and stage designer, best known for his “Endless House,” a womblike, free-form structure.

1966

Inside the Endless House (1966), written as a journal, is basically an account of Kiesler’s artistic life.

1967

Arena was the first regional theater to transfer a production to Broadway; its The Great White Hope, which opened at Arena Stage in 1967, went on to Broadway with its original cast, including James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander in the lead roles.

1990

One of the founders, Zelda Fichandler, was its artistic director from its founding through the 1990/91 season.

1998

The current artistic director, Molly Smith, assumed those duties beginning with the 1998/99 season.
