Job Description PURPOSE OF THE JOB: This role reviews and underwrites large books of business, diverse accounts, and evaluates complex risk scenarios or situations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Participants in rate-making meetings and frequently brings regional specific items that are noteworthy to the group for vetting. * Evaluates and assesses each component of a book of business and understanding the impact each risk has. * Evaluates requests for appeals, and departmental audits. * Presents presentations/webinars for other underwriters, marketing and agency groups. * Coordinates with Manager, marketing, field staff, or appropriate liaison if previous attempts to correct agent performance have gone unaddressed or have not been received well by agent. * Educates, coaches and trains agents on underwriting procedures, philosophy and new products. * Provides support for the agents and field management as an educator and coach regarding how to develop a profitable book of business. * Assists agents and field management on changes in guidelines and processes via teleconferences and webinars as well as in-person presentations. * Leads and coordinates smaller independent projects outside of normal job duties which frequently involve working with others in within and outside of the department and be able to accomplish independently. QUALIFICATIONS: * Associate degree. * Four to six years of experience. * Supervisory/management experience not applicable. OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * The position requires ability to effectively communicate with others to exchange information. * A person in this position performs a variety of routine work within established policies and procedures, and receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments. * The position requires physical presence in company office on part-time or full-time basis. * No adverse working or environmental conditions expected. Job Description A Brief Overview Argo Group currently has a challenging opportunity for an Underwriter in their Excess Casualty line of business. This is a production underwriting position responsible for marketing, underwriting and processing assigned lines of business. This role will work onsite 5x per week at our New York City office location. The primary duties and responsibilities of the role are: * Review and price policies to verify acceptability based upon company underwriting guidelines and granted underwriting authority. * Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. * Interact in person, via email, and by phone with brokers to obtain further risk-specific details, negotiate terms and pricing, and explain company positions. * Manage assigned portfolio in underwriting territory, including the performance (GWP, loss ratio) of assigned brokers. * Create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports/dashboards. * Complete underwriting analysis and maintain complete underwriting file. * Resolve audit disputes within assigned territory. * Review state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within the state. * Participate in educational sessions within the department. Core qualifications and requirements for this position include: * Bachelor's degree and three-plus years related insurance experience and/or equivalent combination of education * Three years underwriting experience with authority * Proven track record of driving profitable growth * Advanced knowledge of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook * Demonstrates an understanding and ability to effectively engage in the negotiation process * Strong oral and written communication skills * Previous insurance educational work, IIA and CPCU designation preferred * Detail oriented with initiative and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment * Excellent analytical skills * Ability to travel The base salary range provided below is for hires in those geographic areas only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
