    We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the Functional Coatings Group in the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory to conduct advanced research in energy storage. A primary goal of this work is aimed at advancing next-generation, lithium-ion technology through a detailed understanding and mitigation of surface degradation mechanisms that limit state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery materials. The focus is to develop atomic layer processing methods to tailor the surface properties of lithium ion battery electrodes using nanoscale thin films and surface treatments. Advanced materials design and characterization will be pursued through various strategies. The candidate should have extensive experience in fabricating and testing prototype batteries, glove box operation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. An understanding of bulk and thin film materials characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy is required. Knowledge of atomic layer deposition and materials for energy storage applications is highly desirable. The successful candidate is also expected to aid in the design, analysis, and interpretation of experiments as well as present findings to the community through publications and presentations. This position will include learning experimental workflows and adapting them for autonomous control. Additionally, the CPS provides an interdisciplinary home for spawning simulation programs and projects, often in collaboration with the ALCF. The ALCF and CPS division are seeking a postdoctoral appointee to develop computational fluid dynamic (CFD) tools that make exascale computing accessible to a broader set of users. The successful candidate will develop a massively parallel solver, capable of running simulations on the Aurora supercomputer, using AMReX (************************************* and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The candidate will develop flow/geometry-aware refinement strategies that go beyond traditional error estimators, creating physics-based adaptation algorithms that intelligently predict where refinement will be most beneficial for smarter, more efficient simulations. We seek someone with a strong CFD background and LBM expertise who can develop methodologies broad enough to tackle a diverse set of problems, appealing to a wide range of computational science users. Key Responsibilities Design, implement, and validate physics-informed AI/ML models for microelectronics materials Curate, manage, and integrate heterogeneous datasets from experiments and simulations Collaborate closely with experimental teams to benchmark and refine computational models Disseminate research through publications, presentations, and open-source contribution Position Requirements Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in Materials Science, Data Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field Demonstrated proficiency in Python and modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) applied to scientific problems Strong background in managing multimodal datasets Proven experience collaborating with experimental teams to validate computational models Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork Preferred Qualifications Deep understanding of AI/ML concepts, including transformers, latent-space representations, generative models, and reinforcement learning Experience with high-performance computing, physics-based simulations, and multimodal data workflows Demonstrated ability to train and deploy AI/ML models using simulated and experimental data Familiarity with agentic LLM-based approaches and related technologies (e.g., RAG, MCP, A2A) Interest in interfacial phenomena and defect dynamics in materials across scales Job Family Postdoctoral Job Profile Postdoctoral Appointee Worker Type Long-Term (Fixed Term) Time Type Full time The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00-$117,925.00.
