The Nurse Extern Tier II is accountable for providing nursing assistance and performing basic nursing procedures to groups of patients within an assigned nursing department, under the supervision, guidance, and direction of a Registered Nurse who may delegate subversion to other Team Member such as; Licensed Practical Nurse and/or State Registered Nursing Assistant. In addition, the Nurse Extern can gain additional clinical practice to enhance their preparation as future licensed nurses
Responsibilities
Under the continuous direct on-site supervision of a Certified Nursing Assistant:
• Interprets plan of medical care and provides input on nursing care plan and assist in the following provided they have been deemed clinically competent by their nursing instructor.
• Completes the nursing assessment form with oversight and approval of RN.
• Provides personal care including bath, shampoo, shave, back rub, positions changes, makes beds, prepares patients for meals, feeds patients and passes ice water.
• Answers call lights and bells promptly to determine and meet patient needs.
• Collects specimens, stool, urine, sputum, etc.
• Collects input and output and records appropriately.
• Collects and records vital signs on patient. Obtains and records pertinent patient information per hospital policy.
• Assist and/or feeds patients. (enteral feedings included), provides between meal nourishments, provides fresh drinking water and encourages fluids when indicated.
• Assists in progressive ambulation of patients by wheelchair, stretcher and bed.
• Administers enemas, douches and inserts rectal tubes and documents appropriately.
• Applies ace bandages and elastic stockings and sequential compression devices.
• Inserts catheters and feeding tubes.
• Applies restraints and side rails to ensure safety of patients.
• Observes isolation technique and give direct care to patients in isolation.
• Assists in ostomy care and education.
• Set up orthopedic appliances.
• Maintains records and reports necessary information in regard to patient care.
• Prepares patients for surgery and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
• Maintains a safe environment for patient care.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Enrollment in Board of Nursing approved School of Nursing Registered Nurse Program
• Completion of basic Nursing Fundamentals and/or Certified Nursing Assistant Course
• Current Transcripts and Copy of Skills Evaluation on basic procedures
• Recommendation Letter from 2 Instructors

Independently and effectively prioritizes job responsibilities in a fastpaced and ever changing environment that has multiple demands/requests. Sets up and distributes contrast to the floors. Works with radiologists, physician's offices and lab to obtain confirmations for biopsies, needle aspirations, etc. (also involved interaction with physician's offices to obtain H&P and lab work). Responsible for implementing downtime procedures in the department when the Medical Imaging computer systems have downtime, reorganizing work flow of department and rerouting patients to other divisions as necessary. Splits studies in CT. Corrects assession numbers. • Performs fileroom duties, interacting with all medical staff and customers. File films Pull films in accordance with ACR film filing standards. File patient reports and films in Medical Imaging jackets. Set up jackets for interpretation by radiologist Look up reports in Quadris and relaying information to requesting parties. Retrieve x-ray jackets for requested physician at films sign-out window. Conduct problem resolution when problems arise. i.e. lost films, hostile customers, physicians, etc. • Maintain knowledge of and observe Universal precautions. • Maintain knowledge of and observe Imaging Department Policies and Procedures. • Responsible for daily checks of blanket and contrast warmers and refrigerator temperature checks. • Responsible for computer input. Modify orders, credit charges, add charges. Functions competently with all computer systems - Quadris, Teleradiology, SMS, Centralized Scheduling. • Demonstrate positive customer service and coworker relations. • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities of the department and institution.

Responsibilities

Internship Details
Duration: 11 weeks, full-time
Dates of Internship: June 1, 2026 - August 14, 2026
Location: Charleston, WV
Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30p
Compensation: Paid internship; relocation assistance available for qualified candidates
Eligibility: Preferred candidates are rising juniors and seniors (Dec 2026 through June 2028 graduation) who are currently enrolled in a relevant degree program; however, all current students pursuing related studies are encouraged to apply.

About the Team:
Labcorp's Women's Health Specialty Lab in Charleston provides a range of services for clients including cytology gyn and non-gyn/FNA and molecular testing on a variety of sample types
The testing laboratory is located Charleston, WV and is responsible for all cytology testing for the entire division which encompasses 10 states. We work closely with local schools offering on site rotations for students of MLS programs

Internship Assignment Summary:
Intern will shadow and assist in all depts of the lab in both cytology and molecular.
Work on a project as assigned by the medical director.
Trained on laboratory assistant procedures to provide hands-on experience with areas including:
Receiving/Accessioning of specimens.
Processing and staining specimens.
Aliquoting sample for molecular testing.
Imaging cytology samples using both Hologic and BD technology.
Interacting with MedTechs and learning the science behind molecular testing.
Interacting with CytoTechs and pathologists in diagnosis cytology specimens.
Perform other assigned projects including process improvements.
Will work in a fast paced, production type environment and be responsible for performing various non-technical tasks within the different departments/areas of the laboratory.
Education/Qualifications/Skills:
Working towards bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology or in an MLS / MLT program
Has experience delivering multiple projects in an academic or professional setting
Ability to collaborate with various stakeholders and internal/external colleagues
Must be able to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in fast paced high-volume environment and while prioritizing and manage multiple tasks
Able to work independently under general supervision
Must be able to regularly lift, carry, and rotate/turn with up to thirty pounds

Under the continuous direct on-site supervision of a Certified Nursing Assistant:
• Interprets plan of medical care and provides input on nursing care plan and assist in the following provided they have been deemed clinically competent by their nursing instructor.
• Completes the nursing assessment form with oversight and approval of RN.
• Provides personal care including bath, shampoo, shave, back rub, positions changes, makes beds, prepares patients for meals, feeds patients and passes ice water.
• Answers call lights and bells promptly to determine and meet patient needs.
• Collects specimens, stool, urine, sputum, etc.
• Collects input and output and records appropriately.
• Collects and records vital signs on patient. Obtains and records pertinent patient information per hospital policy.
• Assist and/or feeds patients. (enteral feedings included), provides between meal nourishments, provides fresh drinking water and encourages fluids when indicated.
• Assists in progressive ambulation of patients by wheelchair, stretcher and bed.
• Administers enemas, douches and inserts rectal tubes and documents appropriately.
• Applies ace bandages and elastic stockings and sequential compression devices.
• Inserts catheters and feeding tubes.
• Applies restraints and side rails to ensure safety of patients.
• Observes isolation technique and give direct care to patients in isolation.
• Assists in ostomy care and education.
• Set up orthopedic appliances.
• Maintains records and reports necessary information in regard to patient care.
• Prepares patients for surgery and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
• Maintains a safe environment for patient care.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Enrollment in Board of Nursing approved School of Nursing Registered Nurse Program
• Completion of basic Nursing Fundamentals and/or Certified Nursing Assistant Course
• Current Transcripts and Copy of Skills Evaluation on basic procedures
• Recommendation Letter from 2 Instructors
