Provides routine and non-routine IT services to end users in order to support the mission of the institution through technology. Deploys enterprise managed tools that manage devices, deploys software and security updates of devices and applications across an enterprise, and updates documented processes.
Job Description:
As a member of Arizona State University's Enterprise Technology (ET) organization, this role contributes to a culture that is relational, authentic, visionary, and empowering. The Medical Education Virtual Skills Lab Technician is a hands-on, highly independent contributor who ensures XR-enabled medical skills labs are operationally ready, resilient, and reliable every day.
This position is ideal for someone energized by emerging technology
and
physical, kinetic work, someone who thinks like a road crew professional: loading in, resetting, and troubleshooting complex technology environments so faculty and students can focus on learning medicine, not managing equipment. The role directly supports the emerging John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering, where AR and MR are core delivery modalities, and it will evolve in tandem with faculty, students, and the curriculum as the program matures.
Position Salary: $65,000.00
Essential Duties:
Daily Virtual Skills Lab Readiness: Prepare skills labs for instruction each day by charging, staging, configuring, sanitizing, and testing equipment, including XR headsets, controllers, haptics, computing, and A/V systems to ensure a “ready-to-teach” environment.
Virtual Skills Lab Operations & Live Support: Set up, operate, and troubleshoot Virtual Skills Lab systems during labs and courses; provide real-time assistance with headset fitting, controller use, boundary issues, connectivity, and battery swaps.
Load‑In / Load‑Out Execution: Perform frequent physical setup and teardown of Virtual Skills Labs, including cable management, device transport, space and equipment resets, and rapid room turnover between sessions.
Independent Problem Solving: Diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and calmly in high-stakes instructional settings; document issues and escalate when needed to minimize instructional disruption.
Faculty Enablement: Partner with faculty to operationalize Virtual Skills Lab instructional plans; provide brief orientations, quick-reference guides, and just-in-time support without assuming instructional design responsibilities.
Device & Asset Management: Maintain accurate inventories of Virtual Skills Lab hardware, peripherals, licenses, and configurations; manage device profiles and app deployments using enterprise device management tools (e.g., Intune, Meta HMS).
Maintenance & Vendor Coordination: Perform routine maintenance, initiate and track warranty or vendor repairs, and coordinate updates and replacements to ensure operational continuity.
Safety, Hygiene & Compliance: Enforce lab safety, infection control, FERPA/HIPAA privacy practices, and Virtual Skills Lab user safety protocols (including motion-sickness monitoring and sanitation standards).
Continuous Improvement: Track readiness metrics (uptime, failures, turnaround time); identify operational improvements; assist with small pilots of emerging XR, AI, and haptic tools.
Community Participation: Support recruitment events, research activities, student experiences, and other medical school functions as needed.
Leverage AI in routine tasks and contribute ideas for using AI to improve the unit's efficiency and overall performance.
Take responsibility for fostering a positive culture, upholding organizational values, and championing engagement in all its forms.
Collaborate across teams and actively participate in ET/ASU events and programs.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience supporting XR, simulation, A/V, or hands-on technical environments.
Comfort working independently in physically active roles requiring lifting, movement, and frequent reconfiguration of spaces.
Evidence of experience building XR experiences in a professional OR recreational context.
Familiarity with enterprise XR platforms (e.g., Meta Quest, HoloLens), peripherals, and device management tools.
Strong troubleshooting instincts and the ability to stay composed under time pressure.
Clear communication skills with the ability to translate technical issues for non-technical users.
Interest in helping shape and mature an emerging XR-based medical education program.
Demonstrated ability to model empathy, compassion, and emotional intelligence.
Experience in a values-driven organization with a strong commitment to inclusion and belonging.
Ability to cultivate a psychologically safe environment where all team members can thrive.
Capacity to inspire and drive meaningful change in individual, institutional, and corporate behaviors to support a more sustainable environment.
Commitment to leading by example through effective communication, active participation, and advocacy for the institution's sustainability programs.
Working Environment:
On-site at ASU Mercado 502 E Monroe St, Phoenix, AZ, in Virtual Skills Lab and adjacent instructional spaces.
Essential job functions include frequent XR quality assurance testing that involves immersive visuals, depth perception shifts, and motion-based stimuli. These requirements may cause discomfort for individuals with photosensitivity, vertigo, or a susceptibility to motion sickness, and should be carefully considered by applicants.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to ~50 lbs), and equipment handling.
Generally standard business hours, but will include early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends based on instructional needs and event support.
Exposure to immersive, high-stakes educational environments where reliability and safety are critical.
Department Statement:
Enterprise Technology (ET) embraces its role as both an enabler and catalyst for advancing the vision and work of the New American University. We are a values-driven organization. Our commitments are reflected in all of the work we do in pursuit of operational excellence, the experience and delight of our community, and our strategic and innovation initiatives.
