Arizona Coyotes company history timeline

1996

Coyotes was announced as the winner on April 8, 1996, finishing ahead of the second-place Scorpions, according to The Associated Press.

The Jets moved to Phoenix on July 1, 1996, and were renamed as the Phoenix Coyotes.

2001

The two inked a deal in 2001 and the city opened the arena less than two years later.

2011

In 2011–12 the Coyotes won the first division title in franchise history.

2014

On January 29, 2014, the new ownership group announced that the team would change its name to the “Arizona Coyotes” for the 2014–15 season.

To reflect the fact that it is based outside of Phoenix and in an effort to further appeal to hockey fans across the state, the franchise changed its name to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014.

2019

Alex Meruelo became the majority owner on July 29, 2019.

2020

A score of 120 means that the team achieved 20% more victories per dollar of payroll compared with the league average during the 2020-21 season.8.
