Founded in 1952, the museum houses indoor and outdoor displays of living animals and plants native to the Sonoran Desert, an arid region embracing parts of the United States states of Arizona and California and the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California Norte.

The site selected was 12 miles west of Tucson in the Tucson Mountains -- much further from the Tucson of 1952 -- with no paved roads and over Gates Pass.

Although an admission charge was instituted in 1953, the museum is still supported only by admission fees, memberships, and donations, and receives no direct support from public taxes.
