Through the Junior League Trust Fund, established in 1929, more than $550,000 has been and continues to be distributed as grants by the League to organizations serving children with disabilities.

1936: Rolla N. Harger, chairman of the department of biochemistry and pharmacology, patents the Drunkometer, the first practical breath test to measure whether people were drunk.

In 1942, the one-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Indiana University Medical Center was extended to three years.

Carl Huber, MD became the first professor and chairman of this department in 1948.

1963: Cardiologist Harvey Feigenbaum pioneers the development of the echocardiograph, a device that detects heart disease with sound waves.

In 1967, Huber was named Indiana University’s first Coleman Professor and endowed-named chair in IU School of Medicine.

In 1970, the department moved from Coleman Hospital to the newly opened University Hospital.

The hospital developed out of a partnership that began in 1989 between the IU School of Medicine and Moi University School of Medicine in Kenya.

Doctor James Lemons initiated the idea for the hospital in 1994, and with his wife, Pam, oversaw fundraising during the next 15 years.

In 1996, the IU program consolidated with the Methodist training program under the Indiana University School of Medicine title.

In 1997, Clarian Health integrated operations of Riley and Indiana University hospitals along with Methodist Hospital, formerly one of the nation’s largest private hospitals.

A supplementary $50 million followed in 2003, then $60 million to recruit physician scientists, expand the Indiana Biobank and support translational research.

Construction on the 10-story, 675,000-sqaure foot Simon Family Tower begins in the summer of 2006.

2008: Pediatrician D. Wade Clapp and colleagues report the first effective treatment for the nerve tumors that affect patients with neurofibromatosis type 1, the most common neurological disorder caused by a single gene mutation.

In 2019, IU Health invested $739 million in community benefit to create healthier people and communities in Indiana.
