Arnot Health is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Labor and Delivery Technician to join our Labor and Delivery team on a per diem basis. This flexible role offers the unique opportunity to be part of one of the most important and memorable moments in a patient's life-welcoming a new baby into the world. Under the direction of a registered nurse, the LPN plays a vital role in providing high-quality, patient-focused care during labor, delivery, and recovery. JOB TITLE: LABOR AND DELIVERY TECHNICIAN -VERSION 2 MAIN FUNCTION: The Labor and Delivery (L&D) Technician provides technical and clinical support in the L & D area. In collaboration with the unit management team and staff nurses, implements specific procedural and technical tasks. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Technical as Scrub Assistant 1. Maintains an orderly surgical field so supplies can be handed quickly and efficiently. 2. Prevents injury to the patient by removing heavy or sharp instruments from the operative site as soon as the surgeon has finished using them. 3. Prevents contamination of the surgical field by the strict practice of aseptic technique. 4. Prevents the possible contamination of team members by following Universal Precautions standards. 5. Is alert to any intraoperative dangers to the patient. 6. Takes part in sponge, needle, and instrument counts, per protocol. These items must be accounted for during the procedure. The technician takes part in counting the items before, during and after the surgery to ensure that they are not left in the wound. 7. Accepts and properly identifies any medications or solutions according to medication safety guidelines. 8. Properly identifies and preserves the specimens received during surgery. 9. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by watching the progress of the surgery and knowing the various steps of the procedure. He/she passes instruments and other supplies in an acceptable manner. 10. Assists the surgeon in tissue retraction, suture cutting, fluid evacuation or sponging the wound. 11. Assembles all instruments and supplies and prepares them for decontamination and resterilization. Assists in the safe clean-up of the operating suite following Universal Precautions. Other Skills 12. Assists in ordering and stocking supplies for the department. 13. Prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization. The technician takes part in cleaning instruments and supplies and in wrapping them properly for sterilization. He/she is knowledgeable about sterilization techniques and is responsible for maintenance of equipment. 14. Assists in the safe transportation of patients in and out if the department. 15. Assists in restocking the operating room suites by removing outdated items. 16. Assists in the preparation and selection of equipment for scheduled procedures. Knowledge Base 17. Understands aseptic techniques. 18. Understands the different processes to render objects clean, disinfected, and/or sterilized. Problem Solving/Decision Making 19. Attends all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position. 26. Provides age appropriate care to patients (Refer to age-specific competencies). 27. EDUCATION/TRAINING: Certified as a Nurse Aide with the New York State Department of Health. Current Heartsaver certification required. EXPERIENCE: Nursing Assistant experience preferred. QUALITIES: Demonstrates professionalism, team effort, kindness and concern for the residents and other employees. EMPLOYMENT SCHEDULE: Required to work weekends, holidays and various shifts as needed. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Involves standing and walking most of the day. Required to lift, move, position and transfer/transport equipment and residents. Ability to adjust to various staff members, assignments and clinical areas. WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed regularly to disagreeable odors, sights, body wastes, etc. HAZARDS: May be exposed to contagious disease and infection. May sustain injury due to irrational resident.
