Viterbo University artistic director job description

Viterbo University invites nominations and applications for a visionary leader to serve as the Executive Artistic Director (EAD) of the Conservatory for the Performing Arts. The anticipated start date is (TBD). Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the EAD is the administrative, academic, and artistic head of the conservatory, overseeing its faculty and staff, operations, season planning, and strategic direction. The EAD also serves the conservatory as its representative and advocate within the university community and the La Crosse region.

The Executive Artistic Director is responsible for and supports the mission-driven educational work of two academic units-the Department of Theatre and Music Theatre, and the Department of Music-and their respective production seasons. Additionally, the EAD is accountable for the mission and work of the Fine Arts Center (FAC)-the university's campus-based arts presenter-supporting the FAC director with a focus on bringing diverse artistic and cultural experiences to the campus and the region. Collectively, the members of the academic and presenting units collaborate to prepare the next generation of performing artists and educators to bring world-class performing artists to the region, and to provide valuable gathering spaces for community events and campus partners.
JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Executive Artistic Director of the Conservatory for the Performing Arts is a driven and passionate leader who will oversee strategy, operations, and advancement of Viterbo University's performing arts mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Artistic and Programmatic Leadership

* Advance the strategic vision for the Conservatory and Fine Arts Center
* Collaborate with the director of the Fine Arts Center to support programming of the presenting season
* Facilitate strategic infrastructure that supports conservatory goals, including marketing, communications, operations, and engagement
* Cultivate and maintain relationships with the local and regional philanthropic communities
* Develop and maintain programmatic collaborations between the academic units across campus and in the community
* Establish and maintain relationships in the industry that support and contribute to the programmatic mission of the conservatory
* Collaborate with advancement and alumni offices to expand the conservatory's fundraising capacity, cultivating relationships with philanthropic communities to develop grants, foundation support, individual and major donor gifts, and corporate sponsorship opportunities

Conservatory Management

* Oversee conservatory staff with direct reports including the Fine Arts Center director, the academic chairs of the Department of Music and the Department of Theatre and Music Theatre, the conservatory production manager and the conservatory technical director (when position is filled)
* Cultivate a supportive, team-oriented culture
* Conduct regular team communications, providing professional development opportunities and completing annual performance reviews
* Collaborate and coordinate with the FAC director and the operations team to manage the physical and fiscal plans for all conservatory facilities and spaces-including the 1,100-seat main theatre, the recital hall, the black box, dance and voice studios, and shops
* Contribute to development of a fundraising plan that supports the short-term and long-term goals of the conservatory

Budget Oversight

* Plan and oversee the operating budget for the conservatory, monitor fiscal year progress, and strategize future budget needs and planning in collaboration with academic chairs and the FAC director
* Ensure responsible fiscal practices which support both academic and presenting operations

Leadership and Management of the Advisory Board

* In collaboration with the university's advancement and alumni offices, cultivate and maintain a Friends of the Conservatory Advisory Board comprised of alumni and strategic partners in the performing arts industry and the local community

Academic Leadership

* Represent the conservatory in deans and cabinet meetings
* Represent the conservatory at appropriate university and community activities and committees
* Attend conservatory events and performances
* Provide academic and professional perspectives from the performing arts industry
* Other duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

* 10+ years of leadership experience in a university performing arts program
* A terminal degree (MFA or PhD) and faculty rank of associate professor or higher
* Must be authorized to work in the United States. Viterbo University is unable to sponsor or take over the sponsorship of the employment Visa

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

CLASSIFICATION: On-Call, Hourly

KROC CENTER HAWAII Vision: Kroc Center Hawaii is a community center where families, individuals, and relationships thrive in the name of Jesus.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Artistic Director will be responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing the artistic vision and focus of the Kroc Dance Academy (KDA). The Artistic Director ensures the highest level of excellence in all KDA programs and performances, within the parameters set by the Creative Arts & Education Manager.

The candidate selected for this position will follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.

The Artistic Director will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

+ Bachelor's degree in Visual and Performing Arts or equivalent experience

+ At least five years of Dance and/or Theater experience

+ Experience in coordinating and implementing a dance production

+ Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

+ Ability to work and interact with a diverse group of people in a positive and professional manner

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

+ Under the leadership of the Creative Arts & Education Manager, provides and develops the creative basis for all Kroc Dance Academy (KDA) productions, including but not limited to choreography, casting, music, sets, marketing, and costumes.

+ Leads collaboration between Performing Arts Instructors, production staff, and administration on the choreography, rehearsal, and presentation of all KDA performances.

+ Creates a timeline and schedule of rehearsals leading up to productions.

+ Leads development of seasonal class schedules in collaboration with KDA Performing Arts Instructors. Assists with class rosters and scheduling substitutes as needed.

+ Develop and maintain the ballet syllabus for KDA Recreational and Pre-Professional track students. Plan for and execute testing for Pre-Professional students.

+ Makes recommendations for ballet competition and outside auditions for students.

+ Assists the Creative Arts & Education Manager with regular assessments of instructors' technique and performance.

+ Make recommendations for continuing education opportunities for staff.

+ Maintain regular and professional communication of class schedules, policies, and program updates with instructors, students, volunteers, staff, and students' families.

+ Display interest, dedication, and enthusiasm for serving the community through performing arts education by identifying and planning outreach programs for KDA.

+ Develop and manage uniform requirements for KDA. Organize storage areas and control use of materials and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.

+ Be present for and assist during end-of-session events and special performances.

+ Maintain regular and punctual work attendance.

+ Assume a schedule of flexible working hours, including weekends, holidays and evenings.

+ Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
