The young Riddle began his venture by leasing a relative’s Asbury flour mill in 1895.
Since 1895, the world's premier carbon and graphite source for countless applications.
By 1903, Riddle was able to purchase the mill outright, paying $2,000, and five years later, he acquired another across the river.
1928: The business is incorporated.
With business again on the rise, Asbury bought a third facility in 1939, a former woolen mill in the village of Changewater, just a few miles upstream on the Musconetcong River.
After the war, in 1948, the Changewater plant was gutted by fire and the company opted not to replace it.
It was 1948 and a major expansion of raw material sources was underway.
In 1960, it acquired Cummings-Moore Graphite Company based in Detroit.
In 1961, Asbury expanded its West Coast business by launching a joint venture in Oakland, California, called Asbury Graphite Inc. of California.
Asbury grew internationally in 1972 by launching an international sales unit to export refined graphite products: Asbury Cumograph Corporation, based in St Thomas, Virgin Islands.
The California unit was moved in 1974 to Rodeo, California, where a new plant specialized in producing calcined coke to serve the cast metal and corrosion markets.
Also of note, in 1977 Asbury reorganized its business under a holding company structure, resulting in the creation of Asbury Carbons, Inc.
1980: Fluxmaster, Inc. is acquired.
By 1984, Asbury bolstered its slate of non-graphite carbon products, purchasing a Union Carbide plant near Kittanning, Pennsylvania, just north of Pittsburgh.
