ASML Holding company history timeline

1975

The company began by manufacturing semiconductor process equipment, grew exponentially in both front- and back-end product lines, and opened a back-end operation in Hong Kong in 1975, where it still has an engineering and manufacturing site.

1981

An initial public offering (IPO) was made in 1981, and stock continues to trade on NASDAQ and the Euronext Stock Exchange in Amsterdam.

1984

ASML Holding was founded on April 1, 1984 and is headquartered in Veldhoven, Netherlands.“

In 1984, electronics giant Philips and chip-machine manufacturer Advanced Semiconductor Materials International (ASMI) created a new company to develop lithography systems for the growing semiconductor market.

1995

In 1995, ASML became a fully independent public company, listed on the Amsterdam and New York stock exchanges.

1996

1996: ASML introduces its step-and-scan system.

1997

A minor surge in 1997 brought sales up to US$137 billion, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association.

1999

In February 1999, ASML joined with Applied Materials to develop the SCALPEL electron-beam projection lithography (EPL) technology.

In June 1999, ASML acquired MaskTools, a business unit of MicroUnity Systems Engineering Inc. of Sunnyvale, California.

2000

In June 2000, Philips further reduced its interest in ASML to 6.7 percent.

In July 2000, the chip business made an important move to larger wafers.

ASML broke into the Japanese semiconductor market in December 2000, marking a considerable coup for the company whose chief competitors had always been Japan's Nikon and Canon.

2001

In March 2001, ASML announced that it expected its financial results to be impacted by continued softening in the demand for lithography tools.

After a stellar year came a profit warning in July 2001, as ASML reported a loss of US$422.4 million.

The move brought total job losses to 2,000--23 percent of ASML's workforce. As a result of the continuing downturn in the semiconductor industry, ASML announced in October 2001 that it would further cut its global workforce by nearly 1,400 positions in an effort to speed up the assimilation of Silicon Valley Group.

ASML would announce net sales of EUR $1.84 billion for the year ending December 31, 2001, compared to net sales of EUR $3.1 billion for the previous year.

2002

Adding further frustration was a lawsuit brought on by Nikon in January 2002.

2004

ASML’s immersion systems, which were first shipped in 2004, have now become a fully-fledged manufacturing ocean.

2008

The first YieldStar (250D) was shipped to customers in 2008.

By mid 2008, ASML has an installed base of 100 immersion systems with 20 customers.

2009

Underlining the robustness of its business model and its ability to deal with cyclical swings, ASML generates a positive cash flow from operations in 2009 despite a significant drop in revenue.

2013

Acquired by ASML in 2013, Cymer is an independently operated business that develops, manufactures and services deep-ultraviolet (DUV) light sources.

2016

EUV lithography turned the corner in 2016, when customers began ordering our first production-ready system NXE:3400 in batches.

2017

Our joint effort resulted in the first shipment of the e-beam pattern fidelity metrology system (ePfm5) in 2017.

2020

Berliner Glas, a hub of wafer chuck technology and manufacturing expertise, joined the ASML family in 2020
