The Aspen Institute company history timeline
The international non-profit organization was founded in 1950 by Walter Paepcke, the chairman of the Container Corporation of America.
In 1951, the Institute sponsored a national photography conference attended by Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, Berenice Abbott, and other notables.
1957 Robert O. Anderson Becomes President Robert O. Anderson becomes president of the Aspen Institute and the position of chairman is created and filled by Walter Paepcke.
1974 25 Years of Good The Aspen Institute celebrates its 25th anniversary.
1978 Aspen Wye River is Born Corning Glass’ Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. donates the thousand-acre parcel that is now home to the Aspen Wye River campus.

1990 Aspen Turns 40 President George H. W. Bush and Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of Great Britain, deliver addresses at the Institute’s 40th anniversary.
In 1996, the first Socrates Program seminar was hosted.
2003 Walter Isaacson Becomes President and CEO Author and journalist Walter Isaacson is appointed president and CEO of the Aspen Institute.
In 2005, it held the first Aspen Ideas Festival, featuring leading minds from around the world sharing and speaking on global issues.

2012 Aspen In Prague The Aspen Institute welcomed the addition of its eighth international partner, Aspen Prague.
Aspen Institute Central Europe was established in 2012 in Prague as a regional platform for Central European countries – the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.
Since 2013, the Aspen Institute together with United States magazine The Atlantic and Bloomberg Philanthropies has participated in organizing the annual CityLab event, a summit dedicated to develop strategies for the challenges of urbanization in today's cities.
Isaacson announced in March 2017 that he would step down as president and CEO at the end of the year.
On November 30, 2017, Daniel Porterfield was announced as his successor.
Porterfield succeeded Isaacson on June 1, 2018.

In April 2020, the company received approximately $8 million in federally backed small business loans as part of the Paycheck Protection Program.
