General Description

An Asphalt Raker is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that assists with the application of asphalt on highways/private roadways/parking lots/driveways using handheld tools. Must partner with other crew members to pave roadways per plan specifications and if need be, to perform tasks of other positions as instructed by crew foreman to insure daily schedules/estimates are met.

Key Duties

+ Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the standards of the project.

+ Responsible for the finished product while enforcing proper safety and traffic precautions.

+ Prepare road surfaces for hot asphalt material.

+ Distribute and rake asphalt material used in construction, repair and resurfacing.

+ Finish surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt material to the proper grade and thickness to properly adhere material to road surface.

+ Repair utility cuts by removing temporary material and replacing with permanent hot asphalt material

+ Performs other related duties as assigned .

+ Must have a "safety first" attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures is required.

+ Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.

+ Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.

+ Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.

Qualification Requirements

+ General. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. + Education and Experience. This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires demonstrable previous experience as an Asphalt Raker. A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred. Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees. One to three (1-3) years or more of industry related experience is required for this position, with an emphasis on paving.

+ Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an Asphalt Raker to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

+ Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.

+ Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds and carry at least 30 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.

+ Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.

+ Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

+ The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., moving equipment, backing alarms, or other alarms, instructions/directions from supervisor and/or spotter).

+ Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that an Asphalt Raker encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

+ Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

+ Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high asphalt levels of noise and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.

+ Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.

+ Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel and hot asphalt mix.

Summary/Objective

The Asphalt Rakeman duties involve shoveling and raking, running wheelbarrow, and safely backing/dumping trucks into paver. The position requires consistent incorporation the company's safety initiatives into daily tasks.

+ Digs, spreads, Rake, and levels Asphalt.

+ Matches and finishes freshly made asphalt paving joints evenly.

+ Smooths and adjusts surface irregularities, restores surface finish, spreads asphalt to proper grade and finishes before compaction.

+ May perform other duties such as assisting with maintenance of machines including adding or removing screed extensions.

+ Lifts, carries and holds material, tools and supplies.

+ Assists in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.

+ Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.

+ Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Brings problems to the attention of the foreman.

+ Perform other duties as assigned. Regardless of other duties, has a responsibility to follow HALL Contracting of Kentucky's safety, and quality procedures.

Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions

Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to use proper personal protection equipment. Use of sunscreen and long sleeves is recommended.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Hours of work vary based on project needs. Overtime as required.

Travel Travel is expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience

At least 1 year experience asphalt/paving required. Well-rounded knowledge of all types of paving equipment and paving operations a plus. High School Diploma or GED preferred. Additional education and related training a plus .

POSITION PURPOSE

The Asphalt Rakers works with rakes to level the asphalt mix correctly as it leaves the asphalt paving screed and is ready for rolling.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Employee shall perform all duties and responsibilities with Sunland's Core Values at the forefront.
• Must work quickly, productively and safely to meet production goals as outlined by the Foreman, Superintendent and/or Production Manager.
• Follow direction of the Foreman and/or Superintendent with regards to daily production schedule and activities.
• Must be an advocate of safety and follow safety policies and procedures.
• Actively participate in job-site and safety meetings and all Company related training.
• Works in conjunction with Foreman or Crew Leader to ensure the job-site is safe and traffic is controlled prior to commencing work.
• Must be a strong communicator and be in constant contact with the Operators, truck drivers and general laborers.
• Inspect, clean and maintain equipment and machinery.
• Responsible for reporting problems and malfunction equipment and/or machinery to supervisor and/or shop personnel.
• May set up and tear down equipment.
• Maintain a clean job site; pick up all tools, equipment, and secure job site each day.
• Understand material handling and storage in compliance with SDS sheets.
• Coordinate and work with contractors, sub-contractors and vendors to complete job.
• Serve as front-line Company representative and must provide excellent service to the customer and to the public.
• Use equipment and/or an assortment of hand tools such as rakes, shovels, wheel barrels, etc.
• Perform all other general laborer work as needed.

Safety

• Will be required to work on project sites and operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, equipment and other tools within local, state and federal safety guidelines.
• This position operates in a professional field environment. The position requires working outside, frequently for long periods of time in all weather, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
• While working, the employee might be exposed to various chemicals, vapors, pollutants, virus or other air-borne pathogens, gases, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles or machines and dust/debris.

POSITION TYPE/ EXPECTED HOURS

• This is a full time position. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

TRAVEL

• Must be willing to travel to any and all jobsites without exception (including staying away from home if necessary.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Work Experience and Requirements

• A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
• Six (6) months to one (1) year related experience is preferred.
• Ability to speak read and write English is preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

• A current driver's license is preferred.
• Must have a clean motor-vehicle record if operating a Company vehicle.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and background check.
