HGL provides environmental engineering, remediation, and construction services, as well as Military Munitions Response Program support to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy, and other federal and state government clients. Currently, HGL is seeking a Assistant Geologist in the Boston, MA area. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting multiple projects primarily across New England, including multiple multi-year U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracts. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to lead emerging contaminant (PFAS) field investigations at U.S. Air Force Installations located across the country.
Responsibilities/Duties

Responsibilities will include leading various field assignments, including drilling and monitoring well installation oversight; field team leader for environmental investigation and remediation projects; collecting environmental samples from environmental media, including soil, soil vapor, groundwater, surface water, and sediment; overseeing surface and borehole geophysical investigations; data management support; developing data tables, figures, and reports; developing boring logs and review/interpretation of geological boring logs. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for office work under the direction of individual project managers. Must be a team-oriented person willing to conduct a variety of field assignments and write cohesive report sections on the evaluation of investigative and remediation results.

HGL is flexible regarding the candidate's location, as its New England-based staff work from home offices and travel from there to HGL's project sites. Travel will be required throughout New England and, at times, to sites located outside of EPA Region 1. It is anticipated that field assignments may require 50% or greater travel requirements, especially during peak field season. Predominant field work support is currently anticipated to occur in the New England area.

Required Skills

Required skills include knowledge of environmental investigations and remediation projects regulated by RCRA and CERCLA; must be able to execute multiple tasks concurrently as field team leader; excellent communication and organizational skills; experience working under detailed quality assurance/quality control programs.

Must be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and other MS Office applications.

Preferred Skills

Oversight of sonic drilling is a plus, but not required.

Required Experience

+ Must have a minimum of three years of environmental field investigation experience.

+ Preparation of work plans and project deliverables (e.g., QAPPs, FSPs, RI/FS Reports, SSHP/HASPs, technical memoranda).

+ Field subcontractor oversight inclusive of soil borings and well installations utilizing various drilling methods.

+ Experience with New England geology, groundwater flow regimes, and boring/well depths.

+ Collection of water, soil, and soil vapor samples utilizing various sampling techniques.

+ Knowledge of and experience with RCRA, CERCLA, DoD, DOE, or USEPA projects.

Preferred Experience

+ PFAS sampling and remediation experience.

+ Vapor intrusion field sampling and mitigation experience a plus.

+ Experience boring log software (e.g., gINT, RockWorks).

+ Experience with preparation/updates of conceptual site models.

+ Groundwater fate and transport modeling.

+ Experience with human health risk assessments.

+ Five plus years of environmental field investigation experience.

Required Education

Minimum of B.S. degree in Geology or related field.

Preferred Education

M.S. degree in Geology or related field (M.S. degree may account for up to 2 years of experience).

Required Qualifications

To perform the duties of this position a person will need to be in good physical health and be able to lift up to 30 pounds in order to perform field tasks. Field tasks may take place in environments which include rugged terrain and weather extremes. The successful candidate will be required to possess or obtain OSHA HAZWOPER certification upon employment and be able to work in various levels of PPE including a respirator, if required.

Travel, overtime, and moderate physical work will routinely be required. While travel requirements are project-specific and will vary, applicant should have the ability to travel approximately 50% or greater depending upon applicant's location.
