Position Title: Assistant Medical Lab Manager / MLS or MT

Department: Laboratory

Supervisor's Title: Laboratory Manager



I. Position Summary: In addition to the duties of the MLS, this position collaborates with the Laboratory Manager in fulfilling the duties of the Technical Supervisor in laboratory operations, regulatory compliance, quality control, quality assurance, communication, resolution of technical problems, personnel orientation, personnel competencies, proficiency testing, and adherence to policies and procedures. Ensures effective communication to lab personnel. Responsible for training lab staff. Collaborates with the Lab Manager on staffing schedules, performance reviews, time keeping, disciplinary actions. Supports CLIA and DNV Surveys. This position fills the lab manager role when the manager is not available.

II. Principal Functions and Responsibilities:

A. Assisting the Laboratory Manager in fulfilling the Technical Supervisor responsibilities as defined in 42 CFR Standard § 493.1451.

B. Responsibilities include those articulated in 42 CFR Standard § 493.1495 for Testing Personnel.

C. Maintains professional certifications as required.

D. Ensures HIPAA compliance, maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information with staff and self.

E. Maintains and learns new intimate knowledge of established policies and procedures, manufacturer package inserts, lab safety and nfection control standards.

F. Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing. Assures continuity of care by conducting verbal and/or written report with incoming staff regarding any pertinent information to their shift.

G. Maintains excellent customer service and professionalism when communicating with patients, colleagues, and vendors.

H. Utilizes safe and good laboratory technique. Maintains instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

I. Solves procedural problems and makes independent decisions concerning emergencies. Understands appropriate triage and multitasking.

J. Precepts and orients new laboratory employees, interns and students.

K. Maintain positive and effective relationships with team, patients and/or other disciplines to ensure continuity of care.

L. Enhances professional growth and development. Attend meetings as required.

M. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

N. Exhibit leadership within the laboratory as well as the organization consistent with our mission, vision, and values.

III. Position Qualification Requirements:

A. Must meet 42 CFR Standard § 493.1489 for Testing Personnel performing high complexity testing.

B. Required Education: 4-year degree in medical laboratory science from an accredited institution.

C. Required Minimum Experience: 4 years training and/or experience in high-complexity testing in the specialties of bacteriology, hematology, chemistry, and immunology as defined in 42 CFR § 493.1449.

D. Required Certification: MLS (ASCP).

E. Additional qualifications: Maintains active ASCLS membership or other profession-related organization, leadership skills with active/ongoing leadership development. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Ability to gather and develop resources. Knowledge of practical implementation of laboratory Quality Assurance, ability to perform and evaluate method validation, linearity studies and quality control.

IV. Work Environment: Primarily indoors, within an adequately lit laboratory with windows.

V. Working Conditions: Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Potential exposure to toxic chemicals. Potential exposure to biohazardous specimens. Potential exposure to sharps. Potential exposure to electrical hazard. Occasional prolonged standing, moderate amount of stooping and bending, occasional lifting of not more than 20 pounds. Schedule may include working 12-hours shifts, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call and overtime.

Implements and supervises the maintenance of clinical practice standards, budgets, and staff development. + Completion of Kaiser Permanente Southern California Postgraduate Fellowship in Health Care Administration.

Education

+ Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

+ Bachelors degree or four (4) years experience in a directly related field.

+ High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

+ Registered Nurse License (California) required at hire

+ Basic Life Support required at hire from American Heart Association

Additional Requirements:

+ Knowledge of Nurse Practice Act, TJC, and other local state, federal regulations.

+ Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
