This is a 10-month appointment.The position is part of ODU's Centennial Faculty Cluster Hire initiative within the SLR and coastal resilience research focus area and will play an important role in advancing the strategic vision of both the BCET and ODU in terms of addressing global challenges associated with SLR and natural hazards. This faculty member is expected to develop transdisciplinary research, education, and outreach programs that can integrate advanced sensing networks, autonomous monitoring systems, digital twin technologies, and intelligent materials to improve the durability, performance, and hazard protection of onshore and offshore coastal infrastructure. This position is envisioned to foster synergy with other cluster hire faculty members, including that in the Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences (OES), and across several subdisciplines within CEE, including coastal engineering, geotechnical engineering, coastal geotechnics, transportation engineering, structural engineering and environmental and water resources engineering.The successful candidate will develop and lead research on smart, resilient infrastructure-such as coastal defenses, offshore structures, and critical facilities-designed to withstand oceanic forces and natural hazards. They should have strong expertise in wave-structure interaction and/or community-scale planning, including hazard mitigation, coastal adaptation, and economic resilience (e.g., cost-benefit and life-cycle analysis). The work may involve collecting and integrating field data from instrumented and monitored infrastructure with coastal hydrodynamic data and analyzing those data using AI/ML tools, numerical modeling, coastal hydrology, spatial planning, and socio-economic analyses, to produce results that can be used to design and develop resilient coastal infrastructure systems and adaptation strategies using advanced and sustainable materials.

This is a 9-month tenure-track position with 45% Research, 45% Extension, and 10% teaching appointment.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to cocreate a pre-eminent extension and research program on seafood quality, safety, engineering, and security in seafood and related products. This position will assist fisheries professionals, processors, wholesalers, and retail establishments to improve product quality, safety, nutritional aspects, and value; And serve as a key resource for national food safety/security efforts and regulatory requirements under the USDA's Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The successful candidate will work closely with VSAREC faculty and staff, faculty across ARECS, and campus faculty in CALS and other colleges at Virginia Tech. This position will support the University's Global Systems Science Destination area; the CALS Center for Advanced Innovation in Agriculture and Controlled Environmental Agriculture Innovation Centers; and create and support critical links between faculty and programs distributed across AREC's, CALS units, and the University.
The position is expected to develop and conduct outreach and educational programs for stakeholders, including producers, educators, processors, consumers, regulatory agencies, and other decision-makers. The individual will be expected to develop and establish nationally and internationally recognized research and extension programs and obtain extramural funding from various sources with an emphasis on competitive and industry funding. Potential research areas may include (but are not limited to) seafood quality, safety, engineering, and cellular agriculture, as well as optimization of value-added and shelf-life applications related to seafood products. The Department of Leadership and American Studies is committed to educating students to understand and practice ethical, responsible leadership and civic engagement. The University is seeking productive scholars in Leadership Studies, or a clearly connected area, such as (though not limited to) social or political psychology, organizational psychology, economics, political theory, intellectual history, communication, or philosophy. Given the interdisciplinary nature of Leadership Studies, a candidate's scholarship and teaching in the field would likely integrate expertise from a related field.
The successful candidate will be able to teach one or more of our core courses for the major and minor in Leadership Studies, along with one or more elective courses. Our core courses include: Self, Group and Leadership; Theories and Perspectives on Leadership; Leadership Through the Ages; Leading Adaptive Change; Values and Ethics in Leadership; and Leadership in Complex Contexts. The department is interested in faculty developing new elective courses that align with their areas of expertise, and especially those that address the intersection of leadership with contemporary issues. Elective courses also draw upon an interdisciplinary perspective to inform the study of leadership.
Faculty expectations, in addition to teaching, include: productive scholarship leading to publications; advising of students; curriculum and program development; and university service. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3-3.
A doctorate in Leadership Studies or a related field is required for appointment at the rank of AssistantProfessor. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank, and ABD candidates who will not hold the doctorate by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor.
