What Does An Assistant Residence Manager Do At Achieve

* The Assistant Residence Manager will provide training, supervision and assistance to residents (people receiving services) with ADL skills and directly participate in daily household management.
* This position-s specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the subsequent items, and are characterized in the following five standards of performance, defined as below:
* I.
* JOB KNOWLEDGE
* Train, supervise and direct Residence Aides while on shift that includes reporting any personnel related issues to the Residence Manager and/or program administration
* Provide training and assistance to residents in order to help them develop and/or improve personal care skills and independent living skills
* Develop, coordinate and provide opportunities for social/recreational activities
* Provide supervision to residents at the IRA and in the community as appropriate
* Provide training to residents with money management such as budgeting, banking and making appropriate purchases
* Responsible for the management of resident-s personal allowance in accordance with the agency-s financial procedures
* Intervene in crisis and/or emergency situations as needed following agency policy
* Provide first aid as needed in accordance with accepted practice
* Personally follow and ensure Residence Aides follow the mandatory steps relating to Medication Administration and documentation per certification, policy and procedures
* Supervise the diet and nutritional needs of each resident
* Provide as needed transportation or access to transportation
* Accompany residents to medical appointments as required followed by the completion of the required documentation and necessary follow-up
* Clean the IRA and contents as instructed by the supervisor
* Act as role model to residents and staff
* Perform fire drills followed by the completion of the required documentation along with reporting any difficulties with evacuating and/or equipment
* Participate in a rotating on call schedule that includes providing coverage on site or for emergencies as required
* Any additional duties as assigned
* II.
* TEAMWORK
* Encourage and maintain a positive working relationship with all departments in the agency, parents, staff, resident and community partners
* Communicate all health, safety, resident and/or program concerns, sensitive situations and incidents to supervisor
* Participate in case conferences, screenings, discharge conferences and meetings as requested
* III.
* DOCUMENTATION
* Complete required documentation in conformance with rules, regulations, policies, procedures and billing practices
* Perform documentation reviews to ensure records are maintained in conformance with rules, regulations, policies and procedures and billing practices
* IV.
* COMPLIANCE & ACCOUNTABILITY
* Identify and report any untoward incidents
* Identify, report and/or correct all safety hazards including physical plant problems and/or problem work practices and assist with investigating all work-related accidents as requested
* Participate in any investigations as required
* Comply with all State and Federal regulations along with agency policies and practices
* V.
* TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
* Obtain and maintain required training certifications that include: First Aid, CPR, SCIP, Medication Administration Certification, and etc.
* Attend all required training, staff development programs and staff/agency meetings as required by the agency and/or State and Federal regulations

* Execute agency and program policies and procedures.
* Implement and maintain the Developmental Disabilities Department’s mission of the Person Centered Plan.

* Assist in the development, implementation and documentation of Individual Habilitation Plans.
* Complete all required documentation on a daily basis prior to the end of the shift.
* Comply with health, safety and sanitation codes.
* Shop for food and household items for the residence.
* Assist with meal planning, preparation and clean up, i.e. clean kitchen, discard garbage, mop floor, wipe tables.
* Assist in providing a clean, safe and homelike environment in the residence.
* Assist individuals to select, purchase, launder, mend and prepare appropriate clothing specific to weather, occasion, etc.
* Transport individuals as needed.
* Accompany individuals on medical and other appointments as scheduled/needed, provide information to medical personnel and relay all information to the appropriate staff in the home/agency.
* Assist individuals to meet their religious obligations.
* Oversee recreational and community outings of the individual’s choice.
* Cooperate with staff in other Developmental Disabilities Program services.
* Use crisis intervention and calming techniques as needed.

How To Become An Assistant Residence Manager

Requirements for social and human service assistants vary, although they typically have at least a high school diploma and must complete a brief period of on-the-job training. Some employers prefer to hire workers who have additional education or experience.

Education

Although a high school diploma is typically required, some employers prefer to hire workers who have relevant work experience or education beyond high school. A certificate or an associate’s degree in a subject such as human services, gerontology (working with older adults), or social or behavioral science is common for workers entering this occupation.

Human service degree programs train students to observe and interview patients, carry out treatment plans, and handle people who are undergoing a crisis. Many programs include fieldwork to give students hands-on experience.

The level of education that social and human service assistants have completed often determines the responsibilities they are given. Those with a high school diploma are likely to do lower level work, such as helping clients fill out paperwork. Assistants with some college education may coordinate program activities or manage a group home.

Although postsecondary education is important, some employers may prefer or allow for applicants who have related work experience. In some cases, candidates may substitute such experience in place of postsecondary education. 

Training

Many social and human service assistants, particularly those without any postsecondary education, undergo a period of on-the-job training. Because such workers often are dealing with multiple clients from a wide variety of backgrounds, on-the-job training in case management helps prepare them to respond appropriately to the different needs and situations of their clients.

Advancement

For social and human service assistants, additional education is almost always necessary for advancement. In general, advancement to case management or social work jobs requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in human services, counseling, rehabilitation, social work, or a related field.

Communication skills. Social and human service assistants talk with clients about the challenges in their lives and assist them in getting help. These workers must be able to listen to their clients and to communicate the clients’ needs to organizations that can help them.

Compassion. Social and human service assistants often work with people who are in stressful and difficult situations. To develop strong relationships, they must have compassion and empathy for their clients.

Interpersonal skills. Social and human service assistants must make their clients feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues. Assistants also need to build relationships with other service providers to become familiar with all of the resources that are available in their communities.

Organizational skills. Social and human service assistants often must complete lots of paperwork and work with many different clients. They must be organized in order to ensure that the paperwork is filed properly and that clients are getting the help they need.

Problem-solving skills. Social and human service assistants help clients find solutions to their problems. They must be able to listen carefully to their clients’ needs and offer practical solutions.

Time-management skills. Social and human service assistants often work with many clients. They must manage their time effectively to ensure that their clients are getting the attention they need.

Some employers require a criminal background check. In some settings, workers need a valid driver’s license.
