    Type of Appointment: Full-Time, Probationary Job Classification: Library Services Specialist III Anticipated Hiring Amount: $4,280 per month Work Schedule: Tuesday - Thursday, 10am - 7pm; Friday - Saturday, 8:30am - 5:30pm THE DEPARTMENT: The primary functions of the Access Services unit include circulation services, reserve services, stack management operations, Resource Sharing (CSU+/Document Delivery services), and the information desk. Circulation Services responsibilities include opening and closing the Library, staffing the circulation desk during all hours the library is open, checking out/in circulating books, videocassettes, CD's, DVD's, professor reserve materials for classroom assignments, customer service. Access Services is also responsible for microform in addition to paging materials from the compact shelving area and assisting patrons with photocopy and printing problems. This Department also assists patrons with disabilities in various capabilities, i.e., to retrieve library materials, copy/print, etc. Stack Management operations include managing the automated book return system, re-shelving of all library materials, including in-house use materials, and "shelf reading" in high use areas. Resource Sharing (CSU+/Document Delivery services) includes operating the electronic interlibrary loan subsystem, obtaining books and journal articles form other libraries, and lending materials to other libraries upon request. The reserve services include consulting with faculty about course materials to be placed on reserve; process both hardcopy and electronic materials to be placed on reserve through the reserve module in the library system; ensure that copyright & ADA requirements are met for all reserve items; maintain reserve collection, assist faculty in posting e-reserves materials on the campus learning management system. Access Services is also responsible for providing customer service and resolving patron issues in a timely and professional manner, evacuating the building during emergencies, and maintaining a welcoming, safe, and pleasant library environment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Saturday Lead Responsibilities: Open the Library on Saturdays at the designated hours of service, arriving on time for building preparation, turning lights on for the appropriate floors, checking for proper function of elevators and following up on any notes left by other staff members regarding problems with equipment, making sure the Circulation desk is stocked and ready for immediate use. Verify Circulation Desk student staff presence is available, if not, a call is made to the student assistants to seek replacements.     This is a lead position that reports to the Columbia Memorial Space Center Manager. An incumbent in this classification is expected to perform a full range of responsible duties and responsibilities under general supervision involving the operation and maintenance of the CMSC, the supervision of CMSC staff, implementation of the educational programs and the functioning of the educational exhibits on the subject of space science and exploration. The following examples are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by persons assigned to this classification: Coordinates event activities; insures that the Columbia Memorial Space Center is maintained and operated efficiently; Reads and understands contract language; Plans, schedules, implements Space Center programs; Assists the Manager in implementation of goals and objectives involved in the operation of the Space Center; Assists in the organization and operation of educational programs involving children and adults; Interacts with children and adults in a learning environment; Prepares accurate and well-written reports; Coordinates the acquisition of equipment and materials to support Space Center programs; may train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of subordinate personnel; May train, supervise, and interact with adult and student volunteers; Interacts with groups that rent or use the facility. Any combination of education, training, and experience that would likely provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position is qualifying. A typical combination includes: Education: Graduation from an accredited four year college or university* with a Bachelor's degree preferably with education and/or science background or related field. Master's degree is desirable. Experience: Four (4) years of recent, related full-time experience, either as a Coordinator in a municipal or community services operation, or in an education or museum environment, or in program involving youth. * Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. The publications are available for review in the City of Downey's Library. Bilingual skills are desirable. NOTE: Part-Time experience will be evaluated on the basis of its fractional equivalent of a forty (40) hour workweek. Knowledge of: Public building operations, learning center facilities, museum operation and educational facilities. Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with various groups and organizations that the use the Space Center, vendors, co-workers and subordinate employees; maintain a regular work schedule that may include week-end work; supervise, plan and organize work; meet schedules and time lines; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; perform effective decision making that includes accurate situation analysis and ability to adopt an effective course of action; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relations with those contacted in the performance of duties; perform work using a personal computer with proficiency in Microsoft Office program, most importantly utilizing Word and Excel; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; follow City work rules and Department policies and procedures. License: Due to the performance of field duties that may require the operation of a City vehicle, a valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out the essential functions of the position may be required. PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS - Work is generally performed in an office environment with moderate noise levels; duties require the ability to speak, hear, touch and see. Also required is the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area to another; occasionally bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling (drawers opened and closed to retrieve and file information); occasionally lifting and carrying materials that weigh less than 20 pounds. Occasional outdoors/field work environment may include exposure to sunlight, temperature extremes, moderate-to-loud environments, and prolonged periods of standing. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter, or calculator; requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as typing on a keyboard, filing, data entry and/or use of a personal computer or other office equipment and supplies; may involve sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time.
