What is an assistant swim coach and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
4 min read

An assistant swim coach works hand in hand with swim coaches to educate, monitor, and train swimmers to reach their full potential as athletes. The assistant swim coach's tasks include schedule management, preparation of facilities, departmental coordination, and procurement of supplies for the team. They also develop workouts and warm-up exercises for the swimmers and track the athletes' progress by recording their activities and performances.

Their role in the team is not a shallow one. Besides teaching breathing techniques and swimming styles, they motivate the swimmers to improve themselves and keep a positive outlook when faced with challenges.

The basic educational requirement for assistant swim coaches is a high school diploma. Certification as a lifeguard is mandatory, as well as knowledge in first aid and training in CPR. They must be dedicated and patient since they often need to work long hours and design individualized programs for the swimmers. Their average salary is $15.79 an hour or $32,838 per year.
