Position Summary

Working under the general supervision of the Head, Library Infrastructure Systems, the Associate Application Systems Developer provides operational and development support for local and cloud-based Unix infrastructure platforms and applications. The Associate Application Systems Developer maintains complex software and server environments using automation and adhere to best practices; coordinate with other systems administrators and application developers to resolve technical issues and incidents; and collaborate with colleagues to provide a flexible, secure, and reliable infrastructure.

This role is being hired at the same time as another Unix-focused infrastructure engineeringand systems administration position in Library Infrastructure Systems. These positions each have specific areas of expertise, but will work together to provide support for the services this group provides .

Subject to business needs, we may support flexible and hybrid work arrangements.Options will be discussed during the interview process.

Responsibilities

Deploy, configure, and maintain CentOS/AlmaLinux server platforms (local and cloud-based). Monitor the availability and performance of production systems (servers, storage, networks). Troubleshoot workflows, monitor trouble ticket queues, and resolve technical issues in coordination with other administrators and developers. Support system and infrastructure services (e.g., Atlassian suite, Web application servers, HAproxy, Amazon Web Services). Maintain current knowledge of industry standards and adhere to best practices. Prepare technical documentation as directed. Collaborate on projects and related activities with other Libraries groups and organizations, Columbia University IT, and outside institutions. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent and minimum of 2 (two) years relevant professional experience required. Proficiency with Unix/Linux environments. Knowledge of programming principles and at least one high-level programming language. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to balance priorities and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Red Hat-based Linux systems (RHEL, CentOS, AlmaLinux, etc.). Experience with Web server administration and systems monitoring. Experience with MySQL, Oracle, or other relevant database administration and optimization. Knowledge of Bash and/or Python

We are looking for a highly motivated, full-stack developer with a minimum of five years experience using modern database and web technologies, preferably with experience in bioinformatics programming. The candidate should enjoy working with other developers and scientists in a collaborative team environment.

The candidate will work at the RCSB Protein Data Bank, Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine (Rutgers). The main focus will be on the development, implementation, and maintenance of complex scientific and web-based software systems. This will include data acquisition, processing, and analysis, and developing software tools to enable the presentation and visualization of 3D structural biology data using complex web-based graphical user interfaces, in order to provide our users with the ability to access, search, and explore the PDB archive. Solutions are implemented using a wide range of components developed and maintained in-house, in addition to third-party tools, libraries, frameworks and technologies. The candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-changing environment, be able to think creatively, and demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills and technologies.
