Develop theory of the case and negotiation strategy. * Respond to all questions and requests from paralegal staff within 48 hours. * Communicate with clients, witnesses, insurance company adjusters, and medical providers to gather information. * Negotiate suitable agreements and settle on the clients' behalf when appropriate. * Review all liens and expenses prior to settlement disbursement to client. * Represent the client at hearings and mediations. * Document and update the status of all case files in the case management system. Ten (10) years of experience as a criminal prosecutor, or nine (9) years of experience as a criminal prosecutor and two (2) additional years of experience in the general practice of law. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. DUTIES: Responsible for the efficient running and supervision of a team of prosecutors while working closely with other supervisors in the office, as well as developing partnerships with outside agencies, to improve the quality of services provided to the citizens of Newport News. Attorney will be able to effectively prosecute misdemeanor and felony cases in various courts on behalf of the Commonwealth. The attorney will prepare and research criminal cases involving complex issues of constitutional law, evidence and trial strategies in all courts of the Commonwealth by conducting legal research, witness interviews, negotiating with defense counsel, preparing jury instructions and presenting cases at trial. Duties will also include responsibility to first-chair homicide cases as assigned. Establishing effective and respectful relationships with office personnel, judicial agencies, victims and witnesses, law enforcement officers and the public.
