Illustrated Career Paths For an Associate

Associate FAQs

What does an associate do?

An associate is a title that can be applied to such a vast array of different jobs that determining what an associate does is nearly impossible without context. At the very least, an associate is an employee who helps to facilitate the operation of an organization or company.

Associate, however, is a modifier that can be attached to several different job titles. An associate manager, for example, would be responsible for managing a team's operation under the supervision of a manager.

However, a sales associate in the retail industry might have responsibilities that range from making sales to acting as a cashier, cleaning the store, and loss prevention.

As the above examples demonstrate, an associate may perform various functions depending on the industry and the associate's job title. Because the title of associate often denotes rank, it is difficult to derive a specific function from this term alone.

Learn more about this question

What does an associate mean in a company?

An associate in a company can mean a variety of different things depending on the company. Different industries and companies use this title in different ways. Usually, though, an associate title denotes a low rank as opposed to senior employees.

An associate is typically a title that indicates the level of a position. For example, an associate manager may manage a small team under the supervision of a more senior manager.

In some companies, though, an associate is the base title for an employee that works to facilitate day to day operations. In retail, for example, retail workers are often called associates.

Learn more about this question

What is a community Associate?

A community associate works within a company to develop public-facing marketing strategies, facilitate public relations and community engagement, and build professional networks at the associate level. Like almost all associate positions, a community associate is a position of low seniority.

A community associate will often work on public relations or marketing teams. They may develop content or strategies to facilitate community engagement with a company or brand. A community associate may have a bachelor's degree in communications or a related field.

What is an associate example?

Associate is a title often attached to another title that describes an employee with low seniority. This is, however, not always exactly true. In some cases, associate is a title unto itself.

In these instances, the responsibilities of an associate usually pertain to the daily operation of the organization or company. This can mean office work, customer service, or physical labor. Associates may be participants in small or large teams facilitated by a manager.

Additionally, associate as a rank may not even refer to an entry-level employee. Some positions use titles like "senior associate."

So, an associate can be almost anything. A food service employee at a fast-food restaurant may hold the title of associate, an up and coming marketing specialist with a business degree may also hold the title of associate.

The title, though certainly not meaningless, is difficult to categorize or describe without sufficient context.
