Description Job Summary: The Marine Science Program at Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2025. We seek highly motivated, enthusiastic, and collaborative candidates who will thrive in the role of the teacher-scholar, where faculty are expected to be excellent teachers and mentors, produce scholarship in their field of interest, and provide service to the institution. Successful candidates will be committed to innovative, inclusive, and experiential approaches to undergraduate and graduate (Master's) education, and will establish and maintain a student-centered, externally-funded, and community-informed research program. The preferred candidate will have broad training in marine science, with the capacity to teach one or more of chemical, physical, or geological oceanography at the graduate level, general oceanography for undergraduate majors, and a course of the candidate's choosing that could fulfill a statistical or quantitative elective requirement for graduate students. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, multidisciplinary aspects of marine science, such as biophysical interactions, biogeochemistry of coral reefs, coastal processes, or climate change. The preferred candidate will also have a vision for how their research and teaching could utilize HPU's unique resources, such as the proximity to nearshore coral reefs and tropical oligotrophic marine environments, HPU's 42-foot motorized catamaran in Kaneohe Bay, and/or HPU's AAUS scientific diving program, to provide diverse opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students with varied interests. HPU values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is committed to hiring faculty who will work to advance these values. Preferred candidates will have a track record of advancing inclusion in teaching, mentoring/supervision, research, and/or service. HPU is a Title III Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander-serving institution, and we seek faculty who enthusiastically support the University's commitment to the academic success of all our students, including students of color, students with diverse socio-economic backgrounds, students who are the first in their family to attend college, students with disabilities, veterans, and students of diverse sexual orientations and gender expressions. HPU aims to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to offer our students a rich variety of expertise, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning. The successful candidate will employ teaching and mentoring approaches that promote student success, especially for students from historically excluded communities. About the Department HPU's Department of Marine Science offers three bachelor's degrees (BS Marine Biology, BS Oceanography, and BA Marine Affairs) and a Master of Science in Marine Science degree with thesis-based and applied (internship-based) tracks. Marine Science program operations are primarily based at the Makapuu campus in Waimanalo, Oahu, which also hosts the Oceanic Institute (an aquaculture research and technology development center) and the Center for Marine Debris Research. Some teaching responsibilities may also take place at HPU's campus in downtown Honolulu, including teaching labs in our brand-new science building. Our program's resources also include a 42-ft motorized catamaran, which operates in Kaneohe Bay, and an AAUS-certified scientific diving program. Faculty in Marine Science typically teach 3 - 4 lecture or laboratory courses per semester, with the opportunity to reduce this teaching load through the procurement of extramural research funding, mentoring student research, or specific service to the department or college (e.g., department chair). Regular faculty are nine-month exempt employees paid over twelve months. About the College The College of Natural and Computational Sciences is home to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Natural Science, and the Department of Marine Science.
