This position will assist fisheries professionals, processors, wholesalers, and retail establishments to improve product quality, safety, nutritional aspects, and value; And serve as a key resource for national food safety/security efforts and regulatory requirements under the USDA's Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The successful candidate will work closely with VSAREC faculty and staff, faculty across ARECS, and campus faculty in CALS and other colleges at Virginia Tech. This position will support the University's Global Systems Science Destination area; the CALS Center for Advanced Innovation in Agriculture and Controlled Environmental Agriculture Innovation Centers; and create and support critical links between faculty and programs distributed across AREC's, CALS units, and the University.
The position is expected to develop and conduct outreach and educational programs for stakeholders, including producers, educators, processors, consumers, regulatory agencies, and other decision-makers. The individual will be expected to develop and establish nationally and internationally recognized research and extension programs and obtain extramural funding from various sources with an emphasis on competitive and industry funding. Departmental Information
The Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science is composed of 34 faculty members and is housed in the $80 M integrated science building that includes dedicated research space for faculty in multiple departments. The University is excited to take ownership of a new building, the Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC), with dedicated space for Kinesiology in Spring 2026, that will house equipment and instruments including treadmills, ergometers, body composition analyzer, a metabolic cart, a Biodex system, an ultrasound device for muscle and tendon imaging, a transcranial magnetic stimulator coupled with electromyography, and a force plate. We also have over $2 million in chemical instrumentation, including modern spectroscopy instruments, a high resolution LC-MS, a 400 MHz NMR, GC-MS, HPLC, ICP-OES, DSC, spectrofluorophotometer temperature-controlled cell, confocal microscopy, real-time thermocycler, and a variety of molecular biology equipment, as well as a vivarium. The department oversees roughly 770 students who are in pursuit of the B.S. degree in Biology with majors in Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology, Integrative Biology, Organismal and Environmental Biology, and Kinesiology, the B.A. in Biology, and the B.S. degree in Chemistry with majors in both Chemistry and Biochemistry. This multi-position cluster hire is part of ODU's Centennial Cluster Initiative, which supports the expansion of transdisciplinary research efforts by prioritizing the hiring of multiple faculty positions targeting specific research areas. The Trustworthy AI cluster hire involves interdisciplinary collaboration among School of Cybersecurity, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice, and builds on existing interdisciplinary strengths at ODU.We seek exceptional candidates with strong research track in Trustworthy AI (broadly defined) to serve as the lead of this multi-position cluster, establishing and leading interdisciplinary research in collaboration with existing ODU faculty and other members of the cluster. We are specifically interested in those who work on fundamental issues related to security, safety, and privacy of AI systems.Old Dominion University was founded in 1930. In preparation for our centennial anniversary, the institution initiated the Centennial Cluster Initiative, a hiring program designed to hire interdisciplinary clusters of faculty around emerging themes. As the first step of that initiative, we seek to hire 25 scholars who can contribute to the university's growing research and teaching portfolio in the area of artificial intelligence. Those scholars will be housed in departments across campus and work together on scholarly activities related to artificial intelligence.

Substantial expertise, experience with recognized scholarship and research in Trustworthy AI.
Ability to provide a clear vision and plan for establishing and sustaining a successful externally funded research program through interdisciplinary collaboration with other members of the cluster, faculty in the School of Cybersecurity and across ODU.

The School of Cybersecurity at ODU was established in 2020 and houses one of the largest cybersecurity programs in the nation with a total of about 1700 students. It represents an interdisciplinary effort bringing together over 40 faculty members with a wide range of expertise in Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Criminal Justice, Cyber Law, Psychology, and Philosophy. The school offers a B.S. in Cybersecurity with majors in Cybersecurity, Cyber Operations, Cyber Risk Management, and AI for Cybersecurity and an M.S. in Cybersecurity with 4 concentrations including AI Security, AI for Cyber Defense, Cybersecurity Risk Management, and Cyber Conflict and Crime. A Ph.D. program is expected to launch in Fall 2026.Cybersecurity research is flourishing in the school. A diverse portfolio of research projects have been developed by and housed in the school, with a total of over $15 million in active research funding from highly competitive programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Naval Research (ONR), National Security Agency (NSA), the Commonwealth of Virginia, and industry.
