Role Description
Under the guidance of a senior research team member, the Research Associate has a pivotal role in our organization focusing on data collection, analysis, and reporting across multiple projects.
Responsibilities
1. DATA COLLECTION, ANALYSIS & REPORTING (70%)
1.1. Schedules, tracks, and completes research activities within established timelines and budget parameters.
1.2. Requests, organizes, cleans, and analyzes project documentation and data from clients.
1.3. Identifies and/or develops appropriate instrumentation (e.g., data requests, surveys, interview protocols, observation protocols, knowledge assessments) for responding to research and evaluation questions.
1.4. Ensures that quantitative and qualitative data are collected using appropriate techniques to ensure reliability and validity.
1.5. Organizes and conducts field data collection including collecting observational data and leading focus groups or interviews as needed.
1.6. Conducts and/or verifies quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
1.7. Translates findings into insights; summarizes and reports results in written and visual formats suitable for consumption by various audiences.
1.8. Assists with development and submission of Institutional Research Board applications and renewals; ensures that established consent procedures are followed consistently across projects; assists with recruitment and retention of study participants from multiple sites.
1.9. Conducts research literature reviews.
2. PROJECT COORDINATION (20%)
2.1. Prioritizes tasks to balance competing timelines across multiple projects.
2.2. Holds primary responsibility for monitoring responses to active surveys across projects.
2.3. Organizes and documents communications related to assigned projects.
2.4. Maintains complete and accurate documentation of project tasks.
3. OPERATIONS & DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT (10%)
3.1. Supports general business operations and new business development, including updating client lists, contributing to proposal development, and conducting outreach to potential clients.
3.2. Maintains effective communications and positive relations with SEG team members and clients. Works respectfully and effectively with diverse communities and engages in collaborative and culturally responsive ways.
Qualifications
· Masters degree in related field (Data Science, Psychology, Public Policy, Program Evaluation, Educational Policy, Educational Research) and at least 2 years applied experience in a research and/or program evaluation context.
· Demonstrated proficiency in quantitative and/or qualitative data collection and analysis.
· Exceptional organizational skills; strong time management and budget management are necessary to produce high-quality work products within the time budgeted and complete assigned tasks without exceeding scope.
· Strong professional communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
· Strong writing skills, including the ability to develop and produce written and visual content to engage and educate stakeholders.
· Experience with Microsoft (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and Google Suite equivalents; Excel skills are critical to this role.

· Proficiency in the design of educational research and evaluation studies, including theory of change, logic models and measurement frameworks.

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking a qualified candidate to perform Firearm and Toolmark examinations at the Eastern Regional Laboratory, located in Norfolk, Virginia.
This Forensic Scientist position examines, compares, and evaluates firearms, ammunition components, clothing, tools and objects bearing toolmarks. To be considered qualified, candidates must be eligible to apply for the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) membership, have completed a documented training program and demonstrate competency in Firearm and Toolmark comparison analysis.
The documented training program and demonstration of competency can consist of relevant academic coursework, internal or external training courses, and competency tests, but must meet the Virginia Department of Forensic Science's training requirements for the candidate to be considered qualified. Records documenting the successfully completed coursework, training and testing will be requested.
Minimum Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college/university
* Successful completion of a documented training program from an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited private, local, state, or federal forensic science laboratory and demonstration of competency in the examination of firearms, ammunition components, serial number restorations, clothing examination for distance determination, tools and objects bearing toolmarks
* Knowledge, skills, and ability to testify in court through experience and/or training
* Ability to work independently, set priorities, maintain accurate records, analyze and interpret data, manage multiple tasks efficiently, establish work priorities, and develop sound conclusions from analyses
* Possess good oral and written communication skills
* Valid driver's license and/or other means of reliable transportation
Additional Considerations
* Experience using the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN)
* Certification by The Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE)
* Experience working in an accredited forensic science laboratory and/or familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ANAB accreditation criteria

Trainee:
If a fully qualified Forensic Scientist candidate does not meet all the required qualifications, a Forensic Scientist Trainee position may be offered to the most suitable candidate with a salary of $50,531. The selected candidate will be expected to successfully complete a Firearms and Toolmarks training program performing comprehensive scientific analyses on evidence related to firearms and toolmarks. Upon successful completion of the Firearms and Toolmarks training program, the trainee's salary will be established within the salary range for a qualified Forensic Scientist. The training will last approximately 24 months, dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate. The Trainee must meet the degree requirements stated in the minimum qualifications. In addition, the Trainee may meet some of the qualified minimum qualifications and additional considerations.
A successful Forensic Scientist Trainee will have competencies that include attention to detail, critical thinking, analytical and deductive reasoning, problem solving, observation, and time management skills.
Trainee Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college/university
* Ability to maintain accurate records, analyze and interpret data, manage multiple tasks efficiently, establish work priorities, and develop sound conclusions from analyses

* Experience shooting firearms
* Experience in the assembly and disassembly of firearms

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Forensic Scientist - NIBIN in the Firearms & Toolmarks Section of the Eastern Regional Laboratory.
This Forensic Scientist - NIBIN position independently test fires and examines a variety of firearms. Responsibilities include documentation of evidence, microscopic examinations of fired cartridge cases for entry into the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN), NIBIN correlation reviews, preparing reports of findings for use by the Criminal Justice System and testifying in court as an expert on examinations performed. Occasional overnight travel is required, and employee will provide own transportation as required.
