Associate scientist job in Portland, OR
Center Overview: The Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research (CEDAR) center is a collaborative institution within the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. The Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. At CEDAR our mission is to detect and stop lethal cancers at the earliest stage because early detection saves lives. This is an ambitious goal, one that requires novelty, creativity, and innovation. We are comprised of biologists, chemists, biomedical engineers, computationalists, and clinicians conducting groundbreaking translational cancer research to help people maintain a high quality of life and reduce cancer mortality, to create a global early detection community, and to have a positive impact on the Oregon economy.
Our Commitment to Diversity: CEDAR is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community. We are dedicated to promoting inclusion and multiculturalism by having outstanding researchers of diverse backgrounds work together on multiple projects. We encourage high-risk, high-reward research projects because defeating cancer requires out-of-the-box thinking and new perspectives. Our research is milestone driven to ensure that each project is fulfilling its stated goals.
Every Knight Cancer employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:
* We act BOLDLY-Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
* We SUPPORT each other-Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
* We work as a CONNECTED team-We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone
Function/Duties of Position
This is an NIH grant funded position with Dr. Stuart Ibsen. We are developing an exciting new type of cancer diagnostic test that combines microfluidic and microarray technology to pull cancer-derived nanoparticles straight from plasma. Our long-term goal is to bring nanoparticle-based diagnostics to the clinic for the first time. We are currently hiring for 1-2 highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers with expertise in Engineering or Biology to work in some of the following general areas:
* Development of biological particle separation techniques using dielectrophoresis technology - using microelectrode array chips to recover cancer-derived nanoparticles from circulation (Gustafson, et al. 2021). This novel work will focus on the development and characterization of new nanoparticle recovery techniques using dielectrophoretic forces. These forces are created by microelectrode array devices that act on the unique dielectric properties of different particles (Ibsen et al. 2017). This work includes increasing particle collection efficiency, understanding the types of particles that are collected and how they can be separated, and developing an internal standard appropriate for different particle types. This position will utilize the high-end specialized dielectrophoresis equipment located here at OHSU. This will also involve quantitative fluorescent microscopy imaging, TEM imaging, immunostaining, and particle characterization.
* System automation - continuing development and finalization of an automated system to conduct the dielectrophoresis work. The goal is to automate the dielectrophoresis collection protocol to increase sample analysis throughput. This will involve basic robotics and automation programming in LabView.
* Cancer biomarker panel development - evaluate the nanoparticle associated biomarkers that are collected for their ability to detect pancreatic cancer from plasma samples. Here the goal is to use the developed dielectrophoresis techniques to collect cancer-derived nanoparticles and evaluate their biomarkers for the ability to detect pancreatic cancer.

You'll work directly alongside our CSO/co-founder and Science Team Leads helping build something from scratch. You'll have input on procurement decisions, equipment choices, lab layout, and operational systems. When we design our new facility, you'll be part of those conversations.
You'll see how a biotech startup actually works - the business development, the strategic decisions about what experiments to prioritize and why. This exposure is nearly impossible to get in academic labs or established companies.
You'll wear multiple hats and develop a broad skill set. One day you're troubleshooting iPSC culture protocols, the next you're evaluating vendors for cell culture reagents, and the following week you're helping write SOPs for our quality management system. This breadth accelerates your professional development in ways that narrowly-focused positions cannot.
You'll contribute to cutting-edge science in stem cell biology, working on technologies that could fundamentally change reproductive medicine. Your work will directly enable experiments that move us toward clinical applications.
This isn't a 9-to-5 job. It's startup life - sometimes chaotic, always demanding, occasionally uncertain. But if you're at a stage in your career where learning and growth matter, this is a rare opportunity.Primary responsibilities - Cell culture operations (50-60% of your time)
Perform primary cell derivations and maintain mammalian cell cultures
Conduct iPSC reprogramming, culture, characterization, and banking
Develop and validate reporter cell lines using knock-in techniques
Maintain detailed experimental records and documentation
Troubleshoot culture conditions and optimize protocols
Weekend cell culture maintenance
Lab Operations & Management (40-50% of your time)
Assist with vendor evaluation and procurement of lab supplies and equipment
Help establish and document standard operating procedures
Maintain lab organization, inventory management, and quality standards
Contribute to lab setup and design decisions for our upcoming facility expansion
Support regulatory compliance and documentation requirements
What this actually looks like day-to-day: Expect extended periods of hands-on lab work. Cell culture doesn't accommodate a traditional schedule - cells need attention when they need it, including weekends. You'll need to be adaptable when priorities shift (they will), detail-oriented when documenting experiments (always), and comfortable working independently while also communicating proactively about challenges and progress.
Required qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Cell or Molecular Biology, or related field
2-3 years of research experience (academic or industry)
Hands-on laboratory experience with mammalian cell culture
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Comfortable with weekend responsibilities for cell culture maintenance
Physical ability to handle extended periods of laboratory work
Genuine excitement about startup environment and mission-driven science
Preferred qualifications
iPSC culture and characterization experience
Molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, libraries preparation)
CRISPR/Cas9 experience (or strong desire to learn)

Who we´re looking for
You're someone who gets energized by building things, not just maintaining them
You're comfortable with ambiguity and can make good decisions without perfect information
You ask questions, suggest improvements, and take ownership of problems
You're self-aware about what you don't know and proactive about learning

Product Development Analyst
Mac's List
Associate scientist job in Portland, OR
At Mission Driven Data, we empower transformational leaders of social services agencies by providing access to meaningful data tools and passionate support. We're looking for a detail-oriented, product-focused team member, with experience working in behavioral health or social services, to join our Product Development team in support of the Director of Product Development. This role focuses on the careful, sometimes time-consuming work that helps our products scale and stay reliable.
We're seeking someone comfortable writing SQL to build and maintain the structured datasets behind our products - creating clear, consistently named tables and views that behave predictably and are easy to build on. This work matters because those datasets directly support the Power BI dashboards you'll also help build, which are designed to work well for dozens of agencies, not just one.
In this role, attention to detail matters more than cleverness. We value people who enjoy following patterns, learning established standards, and producing work that holds up over time. We care deeply about quality and durability, and we expect this role to grow as it encounters new constraints and challenges.
In addition, this position will frequently interface directly with clients, helping to onboard our customers into specific products built by Product Development. While Solutions Consultants handle much of our client work, some products require our team's centralization, technical skills, and administrative access to Mission Driven Data's infrastructure. In those cases, this role coordinates setup steps, tracks progress, and follows up to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
Some parts of this job are deeply satisfying; others are less glamorous but essential. This role is a good fit for someone who takes direction well, handles nuance thoughtfully, and manages their own work with a steady hand.
About Your Technical Skills
You don't need to be an expert in everything listed below, but you should feel comfortable with the core ideas and willing to deepen your skills as you go.
* SQL
You're comfortable writing and reading SQL to build and maintain structured datasets. You care about correctness, consistency, readability, and clear naming.
* Working with structured data
You understand relational concepts like unique IDs, relationships, and how tables fit together. You can reason about how data changes ripple through a system.
* Data structure & taxonomy awareness
You understand how metadata and taxonomies are used to describe and organize entities, and why consistency matters for reporting and usability.
* Power BI (or similar tools)
You've built dashboards or reports and care about clarity, usability, and visual quality. You're comfortable learning new standards to support many users, not just one.
* Very basic comfort with Systems Administration
You're comfortable following documentation and performing well-defined tasks carefully in a shared environment.
* Documentation & reproducibility
You can document what you build so others can understand, maintain, and reuse it.
Non-Technical Skills for This Role
* Behavioral Health Experience: You've worked in or alongside behavioral health or social services organizations, or you're motivated by building tools that support the people doing that work.
* Attention to detail: You notice inconsistencies and care about accuracy and completeness.
* Project management and follow-through: You track work, manage multiple threads, and close loops.
* Comfort taking direction: You listen carefully, ask clarifying questions, and execute thoughtfully.
* Nuance awareness: You handle edge cases and ambiguity without freezing or overcomplicating things.
* Clear, kind communication: Especially when following up or nudging busy humans.
* Self-management: You organize your work without needing close supervision.
* Patience and persistence: You stay steady when progress is slow or work is repetitive.
* Collaborative mindset: You work well with people across roles and technical backgrounds.
This Role Might Be a Fit If…
* You enjoy careful, well-structured work that holds up over time.
* You like following standards and making things consistent.
* You're comfortable taking direction and executing thoughtfully.
* You notice details others miss and care about fixing them.
* You can keep track of multiple threads without dropping balls.
* You're okay being gently persistent with clients and teammates.
* You value reliability, usefulness, and quality over novelty.
What "Good" Looks Like After 6 Months
By around six months, someone doing well in this role would typically:
* Write SQL that fits our standards with minimal guidance.
* Build clean, reliable datasets others can trust.
* Independently produce solid Power BI dashboards.
* Manage client onboarding tasks end to end without things slipping.
* Complete basic system administration tasks accurately and confidently.
* Stay organized and communicate clearly about progress and risks.
* Catch small issues early and handle nuance thoughtfully.
* Make small improvements to documentation or processes along the way.
About Mission Driven Data
