In 1996, the National Board of Directors selected Kweisi Mfume, a former congressman and head of the Congressional Black Caucus, to serve as president and CEO. In doing so, the board changed the name of the leadership position once more.
NAACP leaders and activists entered the 21st century reinvigorated and, in 2000, launched a massive get-out-the-vote campaign.

2017 was the centennial celebration of the Smith – Hughes Act, America’s first step in transforming education.
The property provided ALA with a home until its most recent move in 2020 to 225 N. Michigan Ave.
