Assumption Community company history timeline

1963

In 1963, an open house was held for the new rectory.

1965

In 1965, under the leadership of Monsignor Harold Jordan, the fifth through eighth grade classrooms were built along with the Parish Hall.

1972

Sections of Mary and Joseph’s altar were used to create a new marble “table" altar which was first used on September 17, 1972.

1973

The Florida Catholic Conference first accredited Assumption in 1973 as one of the original schools to receive accreditation.

1978

A further renovation in 1978 completed changes stemming from the second Vatican Council, by removing the old main altar from behind the “screen" (complying with liturgical recommendations for one single altar) and the consecrated section was buried in Holy Rood Cemetery.

1985

Bruckner oversaw the addition to the parish office of the Merrifield Meeting Room, which was completed in 1985.

1987

During the rebuilding of the church, weekend Masses were celebrated in the school gym until Christmas Eve of 1987, when Midnight Mass was celebrated on an unfinished floor in the church, with the congregation seated in folding chairs.

1998

In 1998, in response to worsening conditions for the people of Syracuse’s North Side, Bishop James Moynihan asked the Franciscan Friars Conventual to intensify their presence in the diocese in order to address some of its growing problems.

2003

Michael Varlamos as Assumption’s twelfth presiding priest on July 27, 2003, and tasked him with overseeing the reconstruction project and the spiritual healing of the parishioners.

The first Divine Liturgy in the restored church took place on December 21, 2003.

2010

Jimenez began teaching 3 rd grade at Assumption in 2010.

2013

Jimenez began serving as one of Assumption’s Assistant Principals in 2013.

2014

Maryann Jimenez began her years in Catholic education by first attending Assumption Catholic School and then San Jose Catholic. It was during this time that she began work towards her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership through Saint Leo University graduating in December of 2014.
