* Assists in the building of asphalt plant equipment and related components by safely and efficiently fitting and welding metal parts in a quality-conscious manner.
* Must be able to demonstrate ability to properly and weld using the GMAW and FCAW processes.
* Inspects metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability and produces welds with minimal post grinding.
* Ensures welding machine settings are appropriate for work to be performed.
* Must be trained in and know PPE requirements for welding, including hood and filter shades and arm/body protection.
* Always follow proper safety rules and procedures.
* Overtime including weekends may be required as necessary.

* Ability and experience to weld properly and safely using GMAW and FCAW.

Job Summary:
As a Stainless-Steel Welder at Caterpillar Pontiac, you will operate or tend welding machines that join/bond together components to fabricate products and assemblies, according to specifications and blueprints using specifically stainless steel and other industry used alloys.
What You Will Do (including but not limited to):
Follows set-up guidelines and procedures to assemble and tack weld unit by using various tools (i.e., drop chains, chain hoist, metal shims, wedges, lifting lugs, “C” clamps, bar clamps, com-a-long, cutting torch, grinder, tape measure, fixtures, weld gauges, etc.)
Sets the weld machine to correct setting for the weld application.
Welds unit according to print specifications following guidelines and procedures.
Demonstrate safe job procedures which include but are not limited to: Personal Protective Equipment, Uniform Care, Weld Fume Extraction, Fall Protection, and the use of Lifting Devices.
Ability to inspect your own work including quality checks utilizing weld and attribute gauges and other measuring tools.
Ability to perform routine maintenance such as wire and/or nozzle tip changes.
Ability to perform in station repair on defective welds utilizing air arc process, grinders, etc.
Ability to rotate to a variety of positions within the functional work area.
Ability to use lifting devices for objects weighing more than 35 lbs.
Demonstrate ability to keep the work environment in clean and orderly condition.
Welding using a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Some welding in confined spaces may be required.
Requirements:
One year of experience welding in a production environment.
Beginner level proficiency reading and interpreting blueprints and layout weld stations to produce defect free work.
As described in Weld School Syllabus, you must be able to pass multiple welder qualification requirements during the Caterpillar provided training by a Certified Welding Educator (CWE), Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or approved personnel.

As an Entry-Level Welder, you will work closely with experienced fabricators and welders to:
Execute Precision Welding: Learn and perform TIG welding on stainless steel (and occasionally carbon steel and aluminum) to meet stringent cosmetic and strength requirements, focusing on sanitary/hygienic quality.
Fabrication & Assembly: Layout, read blueprints, and follow complex mechanical drawings to manufacture quality metal parts, fixtures, and assemblies.
Hygienic Finishing: Develop skills in polishing and deburring metal parts using powered or air hand tools to achieve smooth, sanitary surfaces.
Process Mastery: Train to set up and run jobs independently, ensuring acceptable quality and production quantity as your skills develop.
Quality Control: Utilize measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers to ensure finished products meet exact specifications.
Cross-Training: Assist with fabrication tasks, including operating equipment like the collaring machine, as needed.
ð¯ What We're Looking For:
High School Diploma or equivalent AND completion of a formal Welding Technical College/Vocational program or equivalent recent certification.
Demonstrated understanding of TIG welding techniques and processes (knowledge of orbital welding is a plus).
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings.
Proficiency with basic shop mathematics.
Ability to accurately read and use precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.).
Mechanical Aptitude: A strong natural ability to understand, assemble, and work with mechanical components.

Under the direction and supervision of the Department Production Superintendent and in
cooperation with the Foreman and Bay Coordinator, weld metal components with welding
equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair heavy and large mechanical products per
specifications and in accordance with the production schedule.
Key Deliverables
• Adhere to all safety rules and perform work at a quality level
• Read and understand assigned blueprints prior to starting a project.
• Participate in process and product development and improvement programs.
• Accurately inspect metal prior to welding to ensure clean welds.
• Perform grinding operations that comply with Astec's standards
Key Activities & Responsibilities
• Welders are responsible for the layout of plant equipment for welding to ensure proper welding
of metal parts.
• Must be able to safely perform gang-welding techniques (do's and don'ts).
• Must be able to safely weld vertical, flat, and overhead with both MiG and stick.
• Must inspect metal prior to welding for smoothness and acceptability and clean welds to
presentable state (grinding operations).
• Successful completion of Permit Required Confined Space Entry training is needed.
• Must work with Fitters on proper assembly of equipment.
• Inspect welds for quality and proper weld.
• Keep work area clean and neat.
• Ensure welding machine settings are appropriate for work to be performed
• Must be able to safely use cranes and forklifts.
• Must be trained in and know PPE requirements for welding including hood and filter shades
and arm/body protection.
• Must be able to read and understand weld symbols.
• Must select proper rods or wires to perform the welding job.
• Must test all hot oil piping for leaks and repairs as necessary. Repairs would be welding
related repairs. Inspection includes the safe use of air hose, pressure regulator, and squirt
bottle.
• Must maintain welding machines by keeping them clean and changing liners in the welding
guns.
• Follows company policies and procedures at all times.

To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
• High School Diploma or GED required.
