Job Description NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGIST prepare, measure, and administer radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive materials) to detect and treat disease under the supervision of a physician. Operates computer and nuclear medicine equipment for data acquisition, reconstruction of images, and documentation of images, and performs quality control measures for the purpose of ensuring optimal quality images. Prepares patient films for interpretation by nuclear medicine physician. Prepares radiopharmaceuticals, calculates correct dosages, and administers treatment to patients as appropriate. Positions and adjusts equipment over the body area to be studied and operates the imaging systems. Performs ordered laboratory tests on body specimens using radioactive substances. Uses quality control techniques to ensure radiopharmaceutical quality and efficient and effective operation of equipment. Uses protective lead shielding and constantly monitors the laboratory with radiation detectors to help safeguard the work surroundings. Recognizes test results which may constitute critical clinical situations and notifies physician immediately as per facility protocol. Recognizes and responds to other patient emergencies according to facility protocol.
