Thomas J. McInerney has been their President and Chief Executive Officer and a director since January 2013. Before joining their company, Mr. McInerney had served as a Senior Advisor to the Boston Consulting Group from June 2011 to December 2012, providing consulting and advisory services to leading insurance and financial services companies in the United States and Canada. From October 2009 to December 2010, Mr. McInerney was a member of ING Groep’s Management Board for Insurance, where he was the Chief Operating Officer of ING’s insurance and investment management business worldwide. Prior to that, he served in a variety of senior roles with ING Groep NV after serving in many leadership positions with Aetna, where he began his career as an insurance underwriter in June 1978. Mr. McInerney is a member of the Board of the American Council of Life Insurers, and the Financial Services Roundtable. Mr. McInerney received a B.A. in Economics from Colgate University and an M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Martha, the 8th president and CEO of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, has been a recognized leader in healthcare since 2005. Martha came to Blue Cross from DaVita, where for almost seven years she led the company’s critical shift from volume to value-based care, taking full financial and clinical accountability for kidney patients on behalf of commercial payers. Martha also oversaw patient experience and patient education at DaVita’s 2800 dialysis clinics nationwide. Prior to joining DaVita, Martha worked at Aetna for nearly a decade in various leadership roles. She led the company’s effort to deliver simple solutions to help consumers navigate the healthcare system. Martha helped to start up Aetna’s Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plan business; was responsible for Aetna’s national direct-to-consumer sales capability; and served as the general manager for the Northeast Region for Aetna’s Medicare and consumer segment, with full accountability for more than a billion dollars in P&L. Martha was a consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton from 2000 to 2005, focusing on growth strategies in the healthcare and media industries. She served in the Clinton Administration for more than six years in communications and legislative positions in The White House, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Martha earned her M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where she focused on strategy and managerial economics, and she received a B.A. in history from Swarthmore College. Martha served as executive director of the Aspen Group for five years, a non-partisan group of healthcare leaders dedicated to developing and promoting meaningful solutions that advance the health and healthcare of all Americans. She cares deeply about access to education and serves on the Kellogg Alumni Council, and recently stepped down from the Denver Scholarship Foundation board of directors, which provides tools, guidance and financial resources to Denver’s public school students to enroll in and graduate from postsecondary institutions of higher education. Martha is passionate about food security and is an active volunteer with community food organizations in Denver.

Brian D. Pieninck was named President and Chief Executive Officer of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in May 2018 and assumed his duties in July of the same year. Prior to serving as President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Pieninck was CareFirst’s Chief Operating Officer. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing the company’s four Strategic Business Units (Consumer Direct, Small and Medium Group, Large Group/CareFirst Administrators, and Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan), as well as the company’s Technical and Operational Support division. Mr. Pieninck joined the company in 2015, and previously served as Executive Vice President for the company's Large Group Strategic Business Unit and CareFirst Administrators. In this role, he was responsible for the strategy, business development, and operational services for CareFirst’s largest and most complex commercial, state, labor and municipal customer segments. Prior to joining CareFirst, Mr. Pieninck was a member of Aetna’s executive leadership team where he held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility during a 19-year tenure, including President of Southeast National Accounts, and most recently, President of the Americas for Aetna International. Mr. Pieninck is a member of the boards of the Federal Employee Program Board of Managers, Special Olympics Maryland and the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore and is a member of the United Way’s Tocqueville Society. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Studies Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University and is a graduate of Leadership Maryland’s Class of 2016.
