By the census of 1830 Gloucester County, twelve large township, contained 28,431 inhabitants, of whom 13,916 were white males, 12,962 white females, 14 female slaves; 835 free colored males; 714 free colored females.

Atlantic county was created in 1837 and named for its proximity to the ocean.

Samuel Richards and wife gave to the Board of Freeholders the lot at Mays Landing for the county buildings, by deed dated May 25, 1838, and the present court house was soon after erected thereon.

Camden was made a county by an act of the legislature March 13, 1844, seven years after Atlantic County had been created.

In the mid-1860's the Weymouth Furnace site, became the site of 2 paper mills: Atlantic Paper Mills and Weymouth Paper Mills.

Margate City is known for Lucy, the Margate Elephant (built 1881), a six-story building in the shape of an elephant.

"The Argonaut Jr." was built in 1894, by Simon Lake of Pleasantville, NJ and demonstrated at the Atlantic Highlands by Sandy Hook.

By the late 19th century, steam navigation and railways were opening tourist destinations from Lapland to New Zealand, and the latter opened the first dedicated national tourist office in 1901.

Rebecca Estell Winston was the first woman to serve as mayor in Atlantic County and was mayor of Estell Manor in 1925.
