In cooperation with IBM, Swedish savings banks began testing a networked cashpoint in 1968.
The first ATM in the US was installed in September 1969 at the Chemical Bank branch in Rockville Center in New York with the slogan, “On September 2, our banks will open at 9 am and never close again.”
In 1970, a British engineer, James Goodfellow, proposed the concept of a personal identification number (PIN), which automated verification of the identity of customers, thus marking a landmark moment in the growth of self-service banking.
The United States witnessed a major surge in ATM numbers in 1977 when Citibank pledged more than $100 million for the installation of the machines across the city of New York.
By 1984, the number of ATMs installed worldwide totaled 100,000.
Meanwhile, IBM and Diebold formed a joint venture in 1984, called InterBold.
In 1989, the world’s first intelligent deposit ATM was installed.
2001 Inception ATM of America, Inc. is formed and grows organically for the next four years.
2005 Agent program ATM of America, Inc. develops a turnkey agent program providing solutions from sales to installation.
2006 Expansion Portfolio acquisition adds to growth.
2007 Vault Management Relationships with armored services are established with leading providers including Brinks and Garda.
2008 Credit Card Processing Platinum Processing Services, LLC d/b/a Card Network was established as a sister company to ATM of America, Inc. to address the growing need for credit card processing.
2010 Agent Program An Agent Program was designed for individuals who wanted to build their own portfolio of credit card processing merchants.
And, then came the solution: the Interactive Teller Machine (ITM). Launched in 2012, the ITM uses a two-way video link via a call center to provide face-to-face teller support to ATM customers.
2013 Municipal Payment Solutions MPS was founded to process payments made to government entities.
In a cost-reduction move in 2014, for instance, Chilean banks reduced the size of their ATM fleets (as well as the frequency of cash resupplies for existing machines) while encouraging the use of government-sponsored cash remittance networks in mom-and-pop retail stores.
2017 Clubs and Organizations Athletic Club Payment Processing was introduced to cater to athletic clubs and large organizations.
As of 2018, there were more than three million ATMs operational around the world.
According to the consulting firm, Retail Banking Research, that figure is projected to cross four million by 2021.
