Atrium Medical Center history

Wake Forest School of Medicine (formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine) was founded in 1902 as a two-year medical school on the campus of Wake Forest College.

Middletown Hospital Association was incorporated as a nonprofit institution in 1913, and construction began on the new hospital.

The 28-bed Middletown Hospital opened on March 5, 1917.

North Carolina Baptist Hospital opened in 1923 as an 88-bed hospital in Winston-Salem.

Later in 1941, the medical school expanded to four years and moved to Winston-Salem.

In 1983, Middletown Hospital became Middletown Regional Hospital to better reflect the hospital’s ever-expanding service area, including Ohio's Butler, Warren, Preble, and Montgomery counties.

Brenner Children's Hospital and Health Services was established in 1986.

In 1996 United States News & World Report listed Middletown Regional Hospital as one of the top hospitals in the United States.

In 1997 Middletown Regional Hospital became the nation’s first winner of the prestigious Ernest A. Codman Award for quality from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

The Diabetes Wellness Center and the Children’s Center were established in 1999.

The following year Middletown Regional Hospital was the first hospital in Ohio to become ISO 9001:2000 certified.

In 2003 Middletown Regional Hospital again received top honors from the Joint Commission.

Wake Forest Baptist announces that it will become completely "tobacco-free", effective July 1, 2007.

HealthCare's Most Wired Winner Atrium Health has been recognized as CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired 2018 organization for the 15th consecutive year.

In 2019, Navicent Health strategically combined with Charlotte-based Atrium Health.

Energy Star Atrium Health was awarded the United States Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year - Sustained Excellence Award in 2021.
