The Probation Department is accepting applications to fill full-time vacancies for the Deputy Probation Officer position in "All Locations." DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Deputy Probation Officer (DPO) is the entry-/journey-level class in the series. Deputy Probation Officer is distinguished from Deputy Probation Officer, Senior in that the latter is the lead worker level in Probation Field Service operations and the first line shift supervisor level within a Probation Institution.

* May train colleagues in a specialized area of expertise; may train and guide Extra Help employees and volunteers.
Employment Standards

* Possession of a bachelor's degree that included 27 quarter units or 18 semester units of coursework in sociology, psychology, criminology, or a related field that would provide the required knowledge and abilities; OR,
* Completion of 90 quarter units or 60 semester units of college coursework, including 14 quarter or 9 semester units in sociology, psychology, criminology, or a related field that would provide the required knowledge and abilities AND two years of experience performing duties equivalent to Juvenile Institutions Officer, at least one year of which is at the Senior level, or to Probation Assistant with Santa Barbara County; OR,
* A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Requirements:
* Must meet minimum peace officer standards as specified in California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031, including but not limited to: not currently on probation for a misdemeanor; no prior felony convictions (unless fully pardoned); good moral character as determined by thorough background investigation (this includes a polygraph examination); submission of fingerprints for purpose of a criminal record check; and found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the powers of a peace officer.

Additional Qualification within one-year probationary period:

* Communication: Bilingual Spanish skills are desirable. The ability to read, write, and converse fluently in English and Spanish is desirable for some positions. Hiring departments will test you on your fluency. If you do not demonstrate sufficient fluency, your name may be withheld from future certification or removed from the bilingual employment list, in accordance with Civil Service Rule 7.
Assignments to this classification may require working some nights, holidays, and/or weekend. Wearing a uniform is required.

Firearms: Carrying a firearm is not required, and most DPOs do not carry firearms. However, in some assignments, officers may exercise their right to request to carry a department-issued firearm, subject to successful completion of department-required training and approval by the Chief Probation Officer. Assignment to certain units requires training of all officers in the use of firearms, whether or not individual officers choose to carry one. As a DPO promotes through the career series to the senior or supervisory level, he or she may be required (depending on assignment) to undergo firearms training and quarterly qualification at the firing range, even if the individual chooses not to carry a firearm.

The Probation Officer serves in the Probation Services Department and reports to the Probation Services Supervisor. The Probation Officer is responsible for investigating and supervising defendants/offenders referred by the court for basic supervision.
Summary of Job Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential duties and responsibilities of the position are as follows:
* Supervises and monitors offenders granted basic supervision by the court to ensure compliance with supervision terms and conditions, including court ordered financial obligations.
* Prepares case plans and sets goals for offenders in accordance with conditions set by the court. Identifies offender needs and makes referrals for assessment to the court, mental health, substance abuse, and/or other appropriate programs or persons for assistance.
* Testifies in court and makes recommendations. Attends revocation/violation, status, and other court hearings to provide input pertaining to the offender's supervision.
* Maintains records and documentation to record changes in address, employment, and other matters.
* Processes offenders onto supervision in accordance with accreditation standards by completing appropriate forms and documents.
* Collects urine samples and conducts breathalyzer tests.
* Collects DNA samples from felony and selected misdemeanor offenders using a buccal swab collector.
* Conducts searches and seizures for contraband or stolen property, and makes arrests when offender is in violation of supervision terms and conditions. Facilitates and/or prepares necessary documentation for the detention and/or arrest of the probationer.
* Compiles statistical data reflecting number of offenders on supervision, terminations, warrants issued, transfers, and other information to assess day-to-day functioning of programs.
* Obtains certification in approved risk assessment tool (ORAS) and conducts assessments in a timely manner.
* Participates in training opportunities, court activities, projects, and committees as requested or required.
* Completes other duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
* Knowledge of: counseling; chemical dependency; social work; corrections; Ohio Revised Code as it pertains to probation functions; court system procedures and processes; criminal justice system; community social service agencies and resources; universal precautions for control of blood-borne pathogens; criminal justice services policies and procedures.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the position are as follows:

* Obtains certification in approved risk assessment tool (ORAS) and conducts assessments in a timely manner.
* May be assigned to cover comprehensive field work, the supervision of domestic violence probationers and sexual offense probationers, and probationers assigned to specialized dockets, including Men's Achievement Recovery Court, Recovery IS Empowering Court, Veteran's Court, Mental Health Court, and Kushinda Court.
* May be assigned to train new Probation Officers on the processes and procedures to properly perform essential duties and responsibilities of position, provide additional training of existing personnel as identified, and act as mentor for new hires to guide them in their initial development.
