OBJECTIVE
Associate Legislative Counsel Objective
To protect and promote the interests of Farm Bureau members specifically, and agricultural and rural interests in general, as a spokesperson for Michigan agriculture on state issues. To be accomplished by implementation of Farm Bureau policies through the enactment and administration of state legislation and regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate Legislative Counsel Responsibilities
Assist with the development of policy at the county and state level. Disseminate information and training on policy development techniques and "probable issues" to individual Farm Bureau members, county Farm Bureaus, county policy development and other committees, state Policy Development Committee, State Young Farmer Committee, Michigan Farm Bureau Commodity Advisory Committees and other state committees, Regional Representatives, and voting delegates at the Michigan Farm Bureau annual meeting that will result in sound policies which are the platform for all Farm Bureau activities.
Assist in the conduct of statewide, regional, or district policy development meetings for county Farm Bureau leaders.
Research appropriate issues and prepare training materials and information on issues to assist in the development of policies.
Assist in coordinating activities of state and county Farm Bureau officers and board of directors, Michigan Farm Bureau Legislative Committee, Michigan Farm Bureau staff, county Public Policy Committees, state and county Young Farmer Committees, and other county and state committees that may be involved in implementing Farm Bureau policies on state issues.
Assist in the planning of and conduct the MFB Lansing Legislative Seminar.
Implement policies through research, preparation and promotion of or opposition to legislation and/or regulation on state issues as developed by the membership and determined by voting delegates at the state annual meeting and as interpreted by the state Board of Directors. Work with the Governor and executive office staff, the Michigan Legislature and legislative staff, directors, deputies and staff of departments, agencies, commissions, boards, and other organized groups and individuals to get legislation or rules enacted or defeated. Review all bills within subject matter introduced for potential impact on agriculture and Farm Bureau policy.
QUALIFICATIONS
Associate Legislative Counsel Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree required, with preference for an agriculture related field or public affairs management.
Working knowledge of state legislative and regulatory processes normally attained from two to four years' experience in the public policy arena.
Experience with a personal computer.
Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to make presentations to a wide range of audiences.
Preferred
Experience in agriculture related field preferred.

The Office of General Counsel at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Associate Counsel, Generalist.
The Associate Counsel is a member of the SUNY Office of General Counsel ("OGC") assigned to represent the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (DHSU) Campus. The position is responsible for all matters affecting the legal interests of the Campus, reporting directly to the Chief Campus Counsel at DHSU for all legal matters.
Primary Responsibilities of the Associate Counsel: This position advises on a wide range of legal issues about University business, its relationships with affiliated entities, and its administrators, faculty, and staff. Those responsibilities include providing up-to-date and timely legal advice based on thorough research on:
* Student leaves of absence, discipline, dismissal, and appeals;
* Faculty hiring, promotion, tenure, investigations, discipline, termination, and discrimination;
* Drafting and negotiating affiliation agreements within the context of New York State finance and procurement guidelines;
* Reviewing the legal ramifications of external audits, and FOIL handling and interpretation.
This position will also assist in DHSU non-medmal litigation, which is primarily handled in court by the NYS Attorney General as trial counsel and represents DHSU and DHSU employees in state and federal administrative agency proceedings.
Key Position Responsibilities include:
* Developing, negotiating, reviewing academic agreements with other colleges and universities;
* Providing advice and recommendations regarding campus-based polices;
* Legal support to the Office of Student Affairs;
* Advising in various student-related matters concerning academic leaves, discipline and dismissal;
* Creating clear, concise, enforceable, persuasive legal drafts and writing supported by competent legal authority;
* Representing DHSU and DHSU employees in state and federal administrative agency proceedings as well as, on occasion, in state and federal courts;
* Representing DHSU in employee and student discipline matters; discrimination cases and internal investigations, and with labor and employment issues;
* Developing and delivering training to campus constituencies on key compliance issues including 1st Amendment, attorney-client privilege, record retention/e-discovery, email, FOIL, media response, NYS Ethics, and other areas of importance to the campus;
* Maintaining good relationships and communicating effectively with clients;
* Adhering to the highest professional and ethical standards;
* Keeping clients updated on changes to the law affecting the University's legal interests.
SUNY Office of General Counsel (OGC) Duties:
* This interfaces with OGC colleagues to coordinate the delivery of consistent legal services, including the participation in OGC staff meetings and trainings. Last, directly handles all other duties as may be assigned by the SUNY General Counsel.
Required Qualifications:
* Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA accredited law school.
* Admission in good standing to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for immediate admission).
* 5+ years of legal experience.

Position Summary:
The Associate Legal Counsel provides legal advice to Gordon Food Service, its subsidiaries, and affiliates on a North American basis as the company navigates the ever-changing legal landscape. Responds promptly to a wide range of legal work and coordinates closely with Legal department colleagues to ensure delivery of smart, practical and consistent advice on a variety of commercial matters.
What you will do:
Provides legal support to Gordon Food Service, and its affiliates and subsidiaries, in US and Canada. Conducts research, writing, analysis, and effective communication of legal advice and guidance to the law department, sales, procurement, transportation, warehousing, and stores.
Provides general commercial contracting support, including but not limited to the drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts related to the sales and credit agreements, purchasing of goods and services, non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements, contractor and staffing, equipment leasing, simple land leases, and other contract matters that would generally arise in the course of business.
Strengthens processes, tools, templates and technology used to support our Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) program. Identifies gaps in the contracting process, and makes recommendations to the Contract Lifecycle Manager. Supports CLM by drafting standard documents, provisions, and alternate provisions. Helps to maintain the bank of standard contract forms and regularly reviews them to ensure they are up to date with changes in the law.
Monitors changing law and regulatory environment pertaining to the business and provides updates and guidance, reviews and revises policies and procedures, and provides practical solutions for compliance.
Willing to support, step up and stand in on any and all other areas managed by the full-service law department, which includes but is not limited to corporate, M&A, real estate, labor/employment, litigation, technology/IT and innovation, marketing, trademarks, food safety, transportation compliance, occupational health and safety, etc.
Manages ongoing legal matters, including management of outside counsel, and effectively communicates to the business throughout the process.
Prepares and delivers legal training sessions to company employees, both virtually or in-person.
Performs other duties as assigned.

What you will bring to the table:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college required
Licensed to Practice Law in one or more states, Michigan preferred; in the case of Canada, Called to the Bar in Canada
Law Degree (Juris Doctorate - JD or LLB) required
3-5 or more years of post-licensure legal experience required with at least 2 years experience in contract review and drafting. Large law firm training is a plus. Second career lawyers are also encouraged to apply.
