He was Iowa State University’s first Chief Information Security Officer; a four-time Chief Information Officer (CIO) while serving in the US Air Force, retiring as a brigadier general; a corporate cybersecurity VP for a defense and intelligence contractor focused on cybersecurity, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, geospatial intelligence, data analytics; and served as a member of the Defense Department’s Senior Executive Service (SES) as Deputy CIO for Information Enterprise, with the portfolio of developing the policies and governance constructs to enable Defense-wide enterprise services, as well as the upgrade and restructure of the global network security architecture for the military services and Defense Agencies.

Cotton is a graduate of Iowa State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He received Master of Arts degrees from Webster University in Computer Data Management and Personnel Management, and the US Air Force Air University in Strategic Studies.
