Austen Riggs Center company history timeline

1919

The Austen Riggs Center is incorporated on July 21, 1919, by Austen Fox Riggs, MD, as the “Stockbridge Institute for the Study and Treatment of Psychoneuroses,” a “nonprofit, voluntary institution.” It is later renamed the Austen Riggs Center.

1939

Patients resided as paying guests at the Purinton House on Main Street until 1939 when Riggs purchased the building for patient housing.

1940

Doctor Riggs serves as Medical Director until his death in 1940.

1947

In 1947, with the arrival of Robert Knight, M.D. from Menninger as the Medical Director, the focus of treatment at Riggs took a turn away from Doctor Riggs’ original model and toward psychoanalysis.

1950

Out of this recognition came the development in the early 1950’s of the therapeutic community with a system of patient self-governance with an aim toward establishing guidelines and expectations for the entire Riggs community.

1951

Joan Mowat Erikson comes to Riggs in 1951.

1978

In 1978, Daniel Schwartz, M.D. became Medical Director of Riggs.

1981

Damaged by a fire in 1981, the building was renovated with funds provided by Trustee Peter I.B. Lavan, and renamed Lavan Hall in his honor.

1991

As Medical Director from 1991 through the first decade of the new century, Edward Shapiro, M.D. sharpened the focus on psychodynamic systems theory, examining every element of Riggs as part of a larger system that contributes to the overall function or dysfunction of the organization.

2005

An Expanded Therapeutic CommunityIn 2005 Lavan Hall was redesigned to meet the growing needs of the Therapeutic Community.
