1824

The oldest known weather records in Oklahoma began at Fort Gibson in January 1824, in what is now Muskogee County.

1887

The coolest temperature on record for April 2nd at Augusta is 29°F and occurred in 1887.

1893

The first tornado to be recorded in Oklahoma City came on March 22, 1893.

Despite the week of heat, April 1893 does not rank as one of the top ten warmest Aprils on record in Oklahoma City.

1895

June 8, 1895 On June 8th, 1895 the Columbia weather office moved to the Federal Building at the southwest corner of Laurel and Main Streets in downtown Columbia.

1899

May 16, 1899 The warmest temperature on record for May 16th at Columbia is 97°F and occurred in 1899.

1901

February 15, 1901 On February 15th, 1901, the Columbia Weather Office was relocated to City Hall at the northwest corner of Gervais and Main Streets in downtown Columbia.

December 21st, 1901 was the fourth day in a row where temperatures did not exceed 32°F at Augusta, GA.

1905

On this date in 1905, very cold temperatures were recorded over the state of Oklahoma.

1911

On this date in 1911, Oklahoma City set both a record high and a record low temperature.

1915

On this date in 1915, the low temperature at Hooker, Oklahoma was minus 15 degrees.

1916

On this date in 1916, the low temperature at Kenton Oklahoma was minus 17 degrees.

1918

After an early morning low temperature of 7 below zero, the afternoon high on January 11th, back in 1918, warmed to just 2 above zero, giving Oklahoma City its coldest high temperature ever recorded.

1919

1919 — The Kool Kooshion seat cover that uses small springs to hold drivers about a half-inch above the car seat, allowing air to circulate underneath them and behind their backs.

1922

On this date in 1922, the temperature in Oklahoma City warmed to 73 degrees, resulting in the warmest Christmas on record.

1923

On this date in 1923, widespread rain began, which would eventually cause severe flooding along the North Canadian River.

1924

April 30, 1924 On April 30, 1924, a disastrous tornado ripped a 135 mile path across the state, starting in Aiken County and ending in Darlington County.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in July in Wichita Falls was on July 5, 1924.

1925

September 4, 1925 The highest maximum temperature ever recorded in Barnwell County, SC occurred on September 4th, 1925 when an observer in Blackville recorded a temperature of 111°F.

1928

In 1928, the temperature dropped to 50 degrees, which is the lowest temperature ever recorded in June.

1929

The first vehicle to offer heat inside the cabin as an option installed from the factory was the 1929 Ford Model A. These new car heaters sent hot air from the engine into the interior space of the car, but the system had some cons, primarily in the delay in its warming up.

1930

1930 — The first example of a somewhat modern A/C feature the “car cooler” is developed.

1931

October 25, 1931 The warmest temperature on record for October 25th at Columbia is 88°F and occurred in 1931.

1935

Property damage was estimated at $25,000 in 1935 dollars.

1936

The hottest temperature ever recorded in June in Oklahoma City was 107 degrees, which occurred on June 22, 1936.

August 26, 1936 On August 26, 1936, the Columbia Weather Bureau moved to the new United States Courthouse located on the southeast corner of Laurel and Assembly Streets in downtown Columbia, SC. Offices were located on the fourth floor.

1938

It began to snow over central Oklahoma during the evening of April 7, 1938, and continued to snow well into the following day.

1939

1939 — Packard begins to offer the next level in air conditioning as an option.

The “Weather Conditioner” was a $279 option that required the Packard One-Eighty to visit a second factory for installation, since the unit connected to the engine and took up half the trunk space. It was not until the 1939 Packard that a primitive form of air conditioning was offered as a factory-installed option.

1942

The option did not sell well (there was no way to moderate the air from the unit) and Packard dropped it after 1942.

1947

Wichita Falls recorded one of their coldest weeks in history during the first week of January in 1947.

1952

August 30, 1952 Hurricane Able made landfall near Beaufort, South Carolina with 80-90 mph winds and excessive rains on August 30th, 1952.

October 30, 1952 The coolest temperature on record for October 30th at Columbia, SC is 23°F and at Augusta, GA, 22°F. Both occurred in 1952.

1953

In addition, eight daily minimum temperatures from June 1953 are still record-warm daily minimum temperatures, ranging from 75 to 80 degrees.

1953 — The return of air conditioning returns in the form of a rear mounted system like Packard.

1954

October 5, 1954 The beginning of October 1954 was extremely hot due to heat wave like conditions from the 4th-6th.

1954 – The first front-mounted A/C systems were put into production by Pontiac and Nash.

1958

Severe thunderstorms brought large hail and damaging winds to much of northern Oklahoma on July 12, 1958.

The one-to-two-inch snow cover in Oklahoma City provided the first white Thanksgiving since 1958.

1959

Near blizzard conditions occurred over northern and central Oklahoma during a winter storm on March 5, 1959.

1961

Soon after midnight on August 6, 1961, a severe thunderstorm brought 70 to 100 mph winds to Lake Texoma.

November 1, 1961 The beginning of November 1961 (1st-3rd) was very warm in South Carolina.

1962

Severe thunderstorms brought widespread large hail and damaging winds to southwest Oklahoma on May 24, 1962.

1963

A winter storm moved across Oklahoma on December 10th and 11th, 1963.

1964

On January 15th and 16th back in 1964, a strong winter storm system dumped 5 to 9 inches of snow along the Red River Valley of south-central and southeast Oklahoma.

Finally, in 1964, Cadillac released Comfort Control, the world’s first fully automatic climate control system.

1965

Strong winds followed a cold front as it moved east across Oklahoma on this date in 1965.

1967

A 37-year-old record was broken at Oklahoma City, as the temperature soared to 77 degrees, breaking the 1967 record by 6 degrees.

1968

Snow has occurred 9 times on Thanksgiving, with the largest accumulation of 1.4 inches measured in 1968.

1969

A tropical cyclone, that would become Hurricane Camille, formed over the northwest Caribbean Sea on this date in 1969.

1970

January 9th, 1970 was the second day in a row where temperatures did not exceed 32°F at the Columbia Metro Airport.

Damaging winds and lightning struck Ardmore the evening of October 26th, 1970.

1971

The blizzard of 1971 began on the evening of February 20th, over northwest Oklahoma, and would go on to produce a state-record storm total snowfall of 36 inches in Buffalo.

On March 27, 1971, the temperature climbed to 100 degrees at Wichita Falls.

1972

On August 21, 1972, a waterspout formed on Lake Ponca, just east of Ponca City.

1973

Thunderstorms, with high winds and heavy rain, struck the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas for the second time in 4 days on this date in 1973.

1975

Damaging winds occurred over extreme northwest Oklahoma on the afternoon of November 29th, 1975.

1976

Flash floods on September 13, 1976, damaged several homes in the Wichita Falls area.

October 29, 1976 An early blast of cold air dropped temperatures into the 20s across much of the area on October 29th, 1976.

1977

November 13, 1977 The coolest temperature on record for November 13th at Columbia is 22°F and occurred in 1977.

1978

Two people were injured just west of Weatherford on September 18, 1978, when severe thunderstorm winds demolished the mobile home in which they resided.

On this date in 1978, the temperature warmed to 90 degrees in Oklahoma City, which became a record high temperature for October 21.

1979

The second-generation Camaro may not have the classic look that car collectors froth at the mouths for but this fine example of an American classic SOLD BEST in 1979 with 282,571 sales.

1980

From June 24th through July 5th, 1980, Wichita Falls set record high temperatures each day.

1981

December 20, 1981 The coolest temperature on record at Columbia for December 20th is 12°F and occurred in 1981.

1982

On this date in 1982, an intense winter storm dropped heavy snow over portions of northwest Oklahoma.

1983

The morning low temperature in Wichita Falls on April 15, 1983, was a chilly 32 degrees.

A winter storm brought snow to much of Oklahoma on this date in 1983.

1984

A winter storm on December 13th through 15th, 1984, left a heavy ice coating across parts of northwest Oklahoma.

1985

During the late evening of May 6, 1985, severe thunderstorms developed over parts of northwest Oklahoma.

The temperature rose to a toasty 104 degrees in Oklahoma City late in the afternoon of May 30, 1985.

On September 22, 1985, large hail, up to baseball-size, caused $75,000 in damage to homes and businesses in Okarche.

1986

September 14, 1986 The longest streak of consecutive days with a maximum temperature of 100°F or greater for Columbia was 8 days ending on July 14th, 1986.

1987

On this date in 1987, thunderstorms with high winds struck much of Oklahoma.

On this date in 1987, a late season severe thunderstorm developed over central Oklahoma.

1988

A series of storm systems brought heavy snow and bitterly cold arctic air to the southern plains during the week of January 4th through 11th, in 1988.

Winter was not quite over yet on March 16th and 17th, 1988.

1989

Oklahoma's first winter storm of the year in 1989 occurred on December 7th.

1990

On September 16, 1990, the Ardmore High School gymnasium was damaged by severe thunderstorms.

Tornado season started early in 1990.

1991

Baseball-size hail fell on parts of western north Texas on April 2, 1991.

Thunderstorms that formed on May 16, 1991, persisted into the 17th, producing flash flooding over the western and central parts of Oklahoma.

1992

The coolest August temperature ever recorded in Wichita Falls occurred on August 28, 1992, when the temperature fell to a cool 53 degrees.

Damage from lightning occurred with severe thunderstorms in the Stillwater and Edmond areas on September 2, 1992.

At least four people were killed as the result of a winter storm that occurred from the evening of December 4, 1992, into the afternoon of the 5th.

1993

August 3, 1993 August 3rd, 1993 was the 37th day in a row with temperatures at or above 95°F at Augusta Bush Field.

1994

January 16, 1994 On January 16th, 1994, Cedar Creek recorded a minimum temperature of -5°F, the coldest on record in Richland County, SC.

During the afternoon of October 3, 1994, severe thunderstorms brought strong winds and large hail to parts of Wichita County, Texas.

He has been an automotive technician since 1994 and a former automotive instructor.

1995

On this date in 1995, a complex of severe thunderstorms produced widespread wind damage over northwest Oklahoma and the Oklahoma panhandle . Measured wind speeds of 65 mph occurred from near and west of Buffalo, down through Arnett, resulting in downed power lines and trees.

1997

November 18, 1997 The coolest temperature on record for November 18th at Columbia is 24°F and occurred in 1997.

1998

July 16, 1998 Severe thunderstorms damaged a home in Bamberg, SC on July 16th, 1998.

1999

Property losses approaching $1.5 billion have been estimated for this tornado, making it the costliest tornado in Oklahoma history, surpassing the May 3, 1999 storm.

August 19, 1999 August 19th, 1999 was the 15th day in a row with temperatures at or above 95°F at Augusta Bush Field.

2000

June 26, 2000 A local television meteorologist reported baseball size hail around Branchville, SC in Orangeburg County on June 26th, 2000 associated with a severe thunderstorm.

2001

Strong winds from a thunderstorm produced a measured gust of 55 knots on January 19th, 2001 at McEntire Joint National Guard Base.

2002

March 31, 2002 Golfball size hail was reported in Leesville in Lexington County, SC on March 31st, 2002 associated with a severe thunderstorm.

2003

May 6, 2003 An F1 tornado touched down near Johnston, SC on May 6, 2003 then went through Johnston and destroyed one building, damaged a couple of businesses and a few homes.

May of 2003 was an unusual year for tornadoes in the central United States, as most outbreaks occurred during the first two weeks of the month.

The rest is all history, with developments in AC refrigerants, standardization of the modern A/C in the AMC Ambassador and by 69 over half of all American cars have A/C. Your modern A/C units were able to be recharged by 2003 with the launch of IDQ’s single can recharge system.

2004

February 26, 2004 A winter storm produced 4 to 18 inches of snow across the Upstate and northern Midlands of South Carolina February 26th-27th, 2004.

Beginning on July 28, 2004, heavy rain produced flash flooding across western north Texas and south-central Oklahoma.

December 10, 2004 An F2 tornado tore most of the concrete roof off a warehouse and damaged several vehicles and other outbuildings just south of StMatthews in Calhoun County, SC on December 10th, 2004.

2005

January 29, 2005 An ice storm started during the late night hours on January 29th, 2005 and continued off and on through the 30th affecting the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area.

March 17, 2005 The coldest StPatrick's Day on record at Augusta Bush Field is March 17th, 2005 when the low temperature was 39 °F

October 21, 2005 Up to golfball size hail was reported near Bishopville and Summerton, South Carolina on October 21st, 2005 associated with severe thunderstorms.

2007

April 8, 2007 Temperatures dipped well below freezing on the morning of April 8th, 2007.

A severe storm damaging wind event affected many areas across Oklahoma on this day in 2007.

2008

On January 7, 2008, a series of powerful storms tracked across the area during the late afternoon and evening hours.

On March 31, 2008, a powerful low-pressure system developed over northwest Oklahoma, with a dry line extending south from the low.

June 22, 2008 Clusters of muticell thunderstorms produced large hail and wind damage across the Central Savannah River Area of Georgia and Midlands of South Carolina on June 22nd, 2008.

2009

Strong winds blew across the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area producing gusts up to 50 mph on January 7th, 2009.

For the month of October 2009, the state of Oklahoma had some of the coldest temperatures on record.

2010

March 4, 2010 GOES-15, launched on March 4, 2010, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, joining three other NOAA operational GOES spacecraft that help forecasters track life-threatening weather.

May 28, 2010 A severe thunderstorm produced golf ball size hail in Kershaw County on May 28th, 2010.

2011

The largest hailstone ever recorded in Oklahoma fell on this date in 2011.

2012

November 4, 2012 Isolated severe thunderstorms produced quarter size hail in southern Saluda and Lexington Counties in South Carolina on November 4th, 2012.

2013

Record low temperatures were set on May 2, 2013 when Oklahoma City reported a low of 37 degrees and Wichita Falls 38 degrees.

Oklahoma City only reached 48 degrees while Wichita Falls made it to 53 degrees. It was a chilly start to May across Oklahoma and western north Texas in 2013.

June 4, 2013 A severe thunderstorm in eastern Orangeburg County produced an intense macroburst and EF1 tornado that destroyed a chicken barn and damaged several homes on June 4th, 2013.

On Sunday the 19th in 2013, significant supercell storms quickly developed along a dry line just west of the Oklahoma City metro area.

2014

May 23, 2014 Severe storms over areas of the northern Pee Dee region of South Carolina produced baseball size hail on May 23rd, 2014.

Isolated thunderstorms developed over southwest and central Oklahoma during the afternoon of December 14th, 2014.

With a multi-year drought continuing over much of the region, it was a dry start to 2014.

2017

The first part of February 2017 was quite warm across Oklahoma and adjacent parts of Texas.

May 4, 2017 Two tornadoes developed in the Midlands on May 4th, 2017 ahead of an approaching cold front.

2020

On this date in 2020, Oklahoma saw the coldest temperatures for that year.

Ironically, this makes 2020 rank as the 20th wettest year on record.

During the last couple of days in 2020, a series of snow storms moved over the region, producing widespread 4-to-8-inch snow totals.

2021

On this date in 2021, the high temperature at Oklahoma City official climbed above 20 degrees Fahrenheit, to reach 22 degrees, for the first time since the 8th of the month.
