Established in the Denver area in 1962, Auto-trol’s first product was a digitizer manufactured in the garage of the company founder, Bill Barnes.
In the summer of 1969, Richardson and three of his colleagues left Lincoln Labs and founded a company to commercialize computerized electrical engineering design tools.
Computervision was created in 1969 to produce systems for production drafting and in the same year it sold the first commercial CAD system to Xerox.
Around 1970, Auto-trol began interfacing its digitizers directly to minicomputer systems, much like Calma was doing at the same time as described in Chapter 11.
Dora Hillman established a trust fund for Howard and his family in 1970 known as the Howard B. Hillman Trust.
EAC forgave all the loans it had made to Auto-trol except for $150,000 which was repaid later in 1973 and EAC received 2,000 shares of Series A Preferred Stock and 15,000 shares of Class B Common Stock.
In 1973, the Hillman Trust purchased Auto-trol.
In 1976, Auto-trol also began the development of a new graphics workstation called the CC-80.
In 1978, Computervision introduced the first CAD terminal using raster display technology.
When Auto-trol went public in 1979 at $14 per share, Hillmans investment was worth $28 million.
Also in 1979, Auto-trol became the first company to market technical publishing applications to be used to produce the complex technical illustrations needed for service manuals, parts catalogs, and engineering documentation.
At the beginning of 1980, the standard computer being used was a V77-600.

Prime Computer bought Computervision and their CAD software for mainframes and workstations in 1988.
In 1997, Computervision was purchased by Parametric Technologies, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary, and its CADDS 5 software joined the Pro/Engineer CAD/CAM/CAE software as a Parametric offering.
In January 2002, the company announced that it was going private at a price which valued Hillmans investment in the company at less than $12 million.
